  • (Soda) Pop Culture

I posted a fun little post today and when I was answering questions it made me remember some of the pop I drank in my youth.  I got to thinking about different pop or for those of you who no habla Wisconics--soda.  There were so many kinds I used to drink.  I lived for pop long before I was able to gorge myself on beer.  Many of my favorite pops as a kid have since gone the way of the Dodo; disappearing into oblivion. Sometimes a few make it back for a second chance at being consumed, but many have faded away only to survive on Ebay and tribute websites. Enjoy them here, while they last.

    13.  Jones Soda Holiday Drinks (Broccoli Casserole, Brussels Sprouts, Corn on the Cob, Pea, Turkey and Gravy, Christmas Ham, and Pecan Pie)

I know a lot of people are fans of Jones Soda but I can't seem to find it around here so I don't know if they still make these drinks.  I also remember they had a special gift pack, which is where most of these could be found, that was sold as a Christmas gift set.  I always wanted to give a pack of these to my old man but I know he would have bitched because they weren't diet and then, "Why they hell would I want to drink corn?"  When I was living in Minnesota I could only find this mess at Target.  It was probably because Target was this hip and upstart franchise and Jones Soda was that hip and cool soda that hipsters consumed ironically and then ironically laughed at the ironic sayings under the cap.  One of my exgirlfriends had a Jones when she was looking at schools on the west coast and she gave me the cap.  Is it weird that I still have that cap?  It says, "You and your partner will have a happy life together."  Ironic.

    12.  Mountain Dew Pitch Black

I was student teaching in a town that had a Pepsi bottling company and they had experimental pops.  I can't remember what they called this before it was released as Pitch Black but I wish they brought this one back.  It tasted like a sour grape and lemon mixture.  I know some people are probably cringing at that flavor combination but it was pulled off by this drink.  Isn't it odd that for years and years there was only one Mountain Dew and right now it's probably the most bastardized of Pepsi's products?

    11.  Mountain Dew Distortion

This past summer Pepsi allowed consumers to vote for a new flavor of Mountain Dew.  Distortion was my favorite but it didn't win the popular vote like my candidate in the 2000 election.  The greatest day of my life was when the local grocery had an excess amount because no one bought it so they knocked it down to $2 a case.  Needless to say I still am drinking Distortion.  I won't be buying any of that Mountain Dew that won the vote because it has a strange appearance.
    10. Coke II

    http://www.retroist.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/cokeii.jpg
In the 80s, Coca-Cola was suffering from declining sales and Pepsi was the big pop so Coca-Cola thought it would be best if they redid their recipe and get rid of the old taste that made them famous.  The concoction wasn't that bad but it wasn't good old-fashioned Coke.   I remember missing the original Coke but if it wasn't for Coke II we would probably never had known the joys of drinking 2 liters of pop because Coke II was the first to come in 2 liter plastic bottles. Coke II will always be known as one of the biggest failures of the 80s.  I think it had more sugar as well. I really do miss this stuff, but sadly, Coke went back to its ‘Classic’ formula permanently, thus making Coke II disappear into antiquity.

    9. Hubba Bubba
    http://extra.listverse.com/amazon/sodas/hubbabubba-tm.jpg
The strongest memory I have of Hubba Bubba Soda is from grade school. We, in the ass-backward hole that is rural Wisconsin seemed to drink this stuff by the gallon and as children had our own drinking games involving this gum pop. I can't remember the name of the game but we would stand around drinking it as fast as we could while our mouths were filled with the gum and then we would try to blow bubbles.  Loads of fun. I was never a big fan of this gum-flavored pop because whenever I seemed to drink it I always got a migraine, but it does hold certain high esteem in my clogged memory bank.

    8. Pepsi’s Wild Bunch
    http://paxholley.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/pepsi_wildbunch.jpg?w=450
I love how Raspberry is cleverly misspelled into ‘cool’ territory with the two ‘Z’s. Very nice. Anyway, the deepest remembrances I have of this particular trio was the chilling innards of my grandparent’s ancient refrigerator on their back porch. It was one of those ‘chill chest’ types with this huge handle that took all over your strength to open and it had enough wattage to cause neighborhood brown outs. And grandma always kept it filled with every type of drink you could imagine.  She always got the pops that were being advertised on TV or knew that we would enjoy.  Dead and gone now. yes, my grandparents, this pop, and my childhood but I still have the refrigerator which will never die.  I can't remember exactly now but this picture has them in a special carrying case.  I can't remember if that was just for display or if you could actually buy a six pack like that.

    7. Surge
    http://joblesslawyer.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/surge.jpg
Though not out of circulation as long as some of these, Surge has still become a classic to many a pining American. Coca Cola distributed this green soda for quite some time. I can remember it coming in to its own right around 1995 or so, and really building up steam for a few years before succumbing to the popularity of other, weaker, beverages. It had a citrus-like flavor to it but there was something almost lime-Jell-O-ish in the back ground that would always leave a little tang phlegm at the back of my throat. But it was pretty tasty and I could knock back a 2 liter in a sitting no problem. It tasted almost, but not quite, like melted candy.  It was banned in certain counties near my high school because of the high sugar content.  It was astonishing seeing people rush the grocery stores with carts filled with Surge.  I simply think this stuff liquid crack.

    6. Canfield's Chocolate Fudge
    http://www.beveragesdirect.com/images/productpix/large/2400468.jpg
I couldn't find an image for this particular drink but I hold it in high regard.  My babysitter used to have a refrigerator filled with Canfield's Chocolate Fudge.  Imagine taking a piece of chocolate cake and blending it with seltzer water until it was pure liquid.  This drink too gave me migraines but that was the price I had to pay to have this delicious concoction enter my system.  When the Diet Chocolate Fudge came out it was disaster.  It was horrible and then they changed the artwork on the can and it was supposed to be a chocolate bar but it looked more like a giant turd, and with that I stopped drinking chocolate soda.

    5. Josta

This was a pretty recent disappearance. I think I had one of these back when Guarana was a new craze in drinks and Pepsi was trying to market it as a source of energy. Josta was so chock-full of the stuff you could, in fact, taste it. It was a tad medicine-y, but that flavor was nicely buried beneath the strong fruit and spice flavors that assaulted your taste buds moments before. This pop was far different taste wise than just about anything else out there and is one that I do not miss whatsoever.

    4. Orbitz
    http://www.i-mockery.com/blabber/pics/orbitz-bottles.jpg
Oh yeah, soda with little chewy chunks in it. Outstanding. Somehow, the creators of this beverage managed to thwart the normalcies of science by allowing starch nuggets to suspend themselves ever so beautifully in a super-sweet solution. It was really good, too. I remember Target selling the hell out of this stuff for quite a while. I enjoyed the drinking part, but somehow, coming to the little lumps floating there in was a lot like drinking a glass of gravy… except a lot sweeter.

    3. Kick
    Kick-Family-1-Tm
Kick was a lot like the bastard step-son of Mountain Dew and Mello Yellow. It tasted really similar to both, but almost leaning a bit toward Mello Yellow with its citrus overtones. I actually preferred it over either and would go through a case of this stuff during my late night Mystery Science Theater 3000 marathons.  To me is was the poor man's Surge.  Sort of like Sam's Club's Dr. Radical or Mountain Mist.  I have heard that Kick is still on the market but alas I can never find it.

    2. Slice
    Slice-Tm
Slice was the precursor to Sierra Mist by the Pepsi corporation and for my buck, it tasted a whole lot better. My grandmother, in her massive fridge, used to keep a constant supply of the Mandarin Orange flavor of this stuff. I hated mandarin oranges in any form at that time, so I stuck to the lemon-lime standard and all was good with the world. There was something less overpowering about Slice as compared to 7-UP; not quite as crisp, not quite as effervescent, but certainly just as tasty.  The absolute best thing in the world was Dr. Slice, the Pepsico attempt at Dr. Pepper.  Too bad it never caught on.  Although I know a few places where I can still buy it.

    1. Crystal Pepsi
    http://images3.makefive.com/images/entertainment/culture/long-lost-soda-brands/crystal-pepsi-7.jpg
I was in grade school in 1993 and this soda was a huge hit in Wisconsin. The selling price was less than any other cola and I remember getting cases of Crystal Pepsi at the local Kickapoo(yes, Kickapoo, we honor our native Americans around here by naming gas stations after them but then they got bought out by Kwik Trip) for at least $1 cheaper than regular Pepsi.   I honestly loved this stuff, I would drink the HELL out of a pack a week. I loved this stuff and another fun fact was that it never exploded if you shook it before you opened a can.  One time, to prove my point, I threw a can on my roof so that it could roll down and then I could open it without an expolosion.  Well the can got caught in one of the eaves.  I didn't get the can out a few months later. No I didn't taste it.  This pop also introduced me to Van Halen.  Yes, the whole marketing campaign revolved around Van Halen's "Right Now".  Anyway, there was just something about the non-caramel colored Pepsi that really appealed to me. I miss this the most of all.

    Honorable mention:
Pepsi Free (with the pink can and blue balloons)
Tab (now an energy drink for women)

    Coke Blak(coffee flavored coke)
Bawls(an energy drink with a funny name)
Donkey Kick (energy drink sold at Super America gas stations, every time I bought a can I laughed because I wanted it to be Donkey Punch but they did have another flavor and that was Rooster Booster, I always had images a liquid Viagra with that one)

Jolt(hard to find in Wisconsin because of sugar and caffeine content, the best is the mountain dew style Jolt)
Cheerwine(Cherry flavored pop that tasted like sparkling wine)
Manazita Sol (Pepsi apple pop.  I have only seen it in stores twice since it was released)

Pepsi Fire and Ice (The "fire" was cinnamon Pepsi and the "ice" was a mint Pepsi)

Pepsi Blue(this was another berry/cola infusion that somehow never took off)
Sprite Tropical Remix (three different styles of infused Sprite, one was berry, one was cherry and one was tropical)
OK Soda (Hilarious TV ads from Coke.  Tried to appeal to Gen X.  Had unique comic book style cans)
Citra (Coke's answer to Fresca or Squirt)

Red Fusion by Dr. Pepper(it was their first attempt at a cherry flavored Dr. Pepper but from what people say it tasted like Cherry Nyquil)
Lifesaver Pop(yes, Lifesavers got into the pop game.  It came in five flavors and basically tasted like unfrozen Flavor Ice)
7-Up Gold (Actually a form of Dr. Pepper but put under the 7-Up name.  Somewhat comparable to a ginger ale.  Think spicy 7-Up)
dnL (this was the upside down 7-Up.  It was the opposite of 7-Up: caffeinated, green, and in a clear bottle)
    Tahitian Treat
Element Rain (Produced by Snapple, originally an agave cactus flavored juice, now an energy drink)

    Mountain Dew Ultra Violet

    Pepsi Ice Cucumber

    Pepsi Kona...Pepsi's coffee infused pop

    Diet Coke Raspberry...pretty self-explanatory

Pepsi Holiday Spice...they said it was supposed to be a cinnamon Pepsi but to me it tasted of gingerbread

Pepsi Cino- a Pepsi with an added flavor of cappuccino.

Leninade...by far the best communist themed lemonade on the market.

If anyone has any other pop to add to my list feel free to drop a line.

  • I remember Surge! That was my favorite soda until they discontinued it! Then it was mountain dew Code red.

  • @ThePrancingPony -

The thing with Code Red, for me, was that it tasted like a Shirley Temple. I loved it but there was a cut-off point that if I had too much I would get so sick of it. I am going to have to add it to the list.

  • That brings back memories. I loved Surge and Jolt as a kid. I was also a big fan of cream soda, root beer, Mountain Dew and Faygo (all types of varieties). Shasta was always cool 'cause it only cost like 30 cents a can. I don't know if that was a national product or not.

  • @methodElevated -

I remember Shasta but there was one that was cheaper...Jolly Good. Jolly Good was pretty good. Oh and I saw a 4pack of silo cans of Shasta at Dollar Tree. It made me smile.
I am not a fan of cream soda. There is just something about it that has never appealed to me. My favorite root beer is 1919. I have only seen that in Wisconsin and Minnesota and it's only on tap. There were places in Minnesota where you could go into the store and fill up gallon jugs.
I don't think it was until 2010 that Faygo made it's way to my part of the state. It's at least 60 cents cheaper than Pepsi and Coke products plus there is more per bottle. Awesome deals.

  • There were a few derivatives of Mello Yello back in the early 00's to compete with Mountain Dew Code Red. One of em was cherry (obviously the direct response to Code Red), one was a melon flavour that was really good and had no competition, and there was supposedly a peach flavour that I never saw. They were eventually discontinued, and I don't even think they made it out of the test markets. Oh, and Mountain Dew Game Fuel was the shit. I drank a two liter of the stuff in minutes and then prank IMed people all night.

  • Oh, and Josta was made by Pepsi, not Coke.

  • Also, you should add Pepsi Vanilla as well as Pepsi and Coke lime and Pepsi and Coke lemon.

  • I've drank a bit of soda in my day.

  • @Rob_of_the_Sky -

Thanks, I swear Josta was made by Coke but maybe that's because the guy who I rode home with from college when I had my first Josta worked for Pepsi and didn't want to take credit for that stuff.
Oh yeah, Game Fuel, I think they still have that at my grocery store. I loved the commercials.
Thanks for the ideas. I loved how Pepsi and Coke were constantly going back and forth with their vanilla, lime, and lemon flavors.

  • pepsi fire is covering mexicali soda. you got canfields too. but the disaster of faked sweeteners deserves a tab mention.
althought it isn't historic jaritos tamarindo soda is really good and exotic as our usual flavor options go.

also there was a brief time in the 80's late when san francisco seltzer made inroads into the market.

I'm curious if you follow this zero trend instead of calling something diet...it's an altered recipe slightly but very often it's naught more than the same aspartame sweetened diet whatever of fiver years before. aspartame sure is being let out to swing in the breeze as some kind of toxic. diet dr pepper sure did instill the only saving grace to diet in that it literally is very very similarly tasting pleasing.

I liked jolt up until I did 7th grade science and we watched the effects of caffeine on the system and for whatever reason in life, science truly kills the magic of living.

oh and where's the seven up GOLD? that was also a neat one of the time.

coke two has one simple addition - cictric acid. coca cola which is otherwise containing only phosphoric acid. coke is unique in that but forgot that unique is unique, ignoring the younger generations is also a blunder but changing who you are... an absolute sin. classic coke really isn't even classic either, bring back the cocaine extract included soda and then it's "classic" ;)

and where oh where is soix city sarsasparilla? come on now?

  • My current favorite Pop (IT'S POP NOT SODA...as you can tell this is something that I feel very strongly about...) is Pineapple Fanta. Or Strawberry Fanta. But close behind this is Raspberry Ginger Ale, Regular Ginger Ale and Mello Yello

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Actually, there were two rounds of Game Fuel, one for Halo 3 and one for WOW (which had two flavours of Game Fuel). There were so many versions of Mountain Dew, like Livewire which was like Orange soda, and the original Dewocracy trilogy of Voltage, Revolution, and Super Nova. Oh and the Dr. Pepper Red Fusion tasted like...Dr. Pepper. That was the biggest mind fuck of em all. There was also a Dr. Pepper cherry vanilla as well as a Dr. Pepper berries & cream (that one may still be around), and I'm guessing that Cherry Dr. Pepper is what Red Fusion should've been.

  • ....This post is making me refrain from any desire I had to continue drinking soda. Too much e-sugar in one page. haha @liquid Viagra.

  • Gods...sodas that taste like xmas dinner. Part of me wants to hurl, part is thinking, "I wonder what the broccoli casserole stuff tastes like?"

The way you described the flavor of the MD Pitch Black reminds me of my favorite discontinued variety of Kool Aid: Purplesaurus Rex, which was a grape flavored lemonade so delicious I gave up sodas almost entirely one summer while with hubby #1. I have to find one!

Why, oh why, was Hubba Bubba not sent to the east coast? WHY?! HB is by far my favorite brand of bubble gum. I'd have bought cases of the stuff!

Orbitz is intriguing, kind of like bubble tea in carbonated form. Another must-find! The chewy things look like little jewels of sweet, tasty goodness.

How I miss Slice. I had cases of it taking up the first shelf of my fridge from the time it was released until it was discontinued. Citra was borderline addictive too. Who am I kidding? It was completely addictive. Like crack, only sweeter.

I think I may make it one of my missions in life to locate and taste Pepsi Cucumber.

Did you try any of the carbonated coffees? I didn't but have to admit a certain curiosity regarding carbonation+coffee. Starbuck's released a version two-three years ago that failed miserably and was pulled after a few months on the market.

This is the Lime Ricky I was talking about last night: http://www.thepopshoppe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Bottle-Lime-Rickey-Sweat.png
The Pop Shoppe only had two stores in Maryland (that I ever saw, anyway), and none of them were within easy commuting distance. Lime Ricky is one of those fond memories made fonder by limited availability.

Remember NeHi? Orange NeHi went on permanent hiatus in this area when I was about 11, but hot damn it was good. The grape stuff...not so much.

Awesome entry, Godfather! It's nice to find another person so soda-obsessed. :o )

  • Mmmmmm . . . Jolt.  I loved that stuff.  I used to stop at the Speedy Market on the way to school every morning just to buy Jolt and Funyuns.  And OK Cola . . . I remember those commercials.  "Everything is going to be O.K."  I remember thinking it didn't taste that horrible, but all my friends hated it.

Pepsi Cucumber?  Ummm, I like Pepsi, and I like cucumbers, but . . . two great tastes that taste great together?  Not so sure.  Never heard of it until right now.  In fact, I've never heard of most of these until now.  Excellent post!!  Thanks!!

  • I remember everyone going crazy for Surge....but like Mountain Dew, I never liked it. I will always have a soft spot for Classic Coke under the fillings of my molars. lol

I miss coke sometimes (been a year without it).

  • I've never drank any of these sodas..thank god..because most look nasty in its own right.

  • I love Jones! Surge is what I miss the most, but I'm not old enough to remember a lot of these. :/

I saw Bawls at a grocery store in Utah one time though. I've never seen it anywhere else. It was weird as Hell though, haha. This was a sweet post, man. Thanks for entertaining me.

  • SURGE!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You know..I think you did something to my mind subconsciously. You see,..I'm the kind of person who would get themself one can of soda (from the same company because they're weird like that.) and that's it. Not today, though. Nope! I ended up getting myself FOUR kinds of soda; none of which includes the kind I used to buy because, I told myself, why not try something new? They look oh so nice! And oh-lookie!!*points at a type of soda* I've always wanted to try one of those! ...Just wanted to fill you in. Have a great day! =)

Note: So, yes, nevermind that first comment I made. xD

  • What a fun post! I remember some of these! I always wanted to try Orbitz but never did.
Growing up we rarely got soda...only for special occasions...and then they always bought the store brand or Shasta.
    HUGS!

  • @I_once_was -

I keep forgetting to bring in Tab. I found the actual Tab pop at a grocery store not too long ago when I thought it was only an energy drink marketed toward women these days.
You seem to know about pop, what the difference between the Pepsi Max and Diet Pepsi and Coke Zero and Diet Coke. The only thing I can pick out is the flavor. Except with those Pepsis, Diet Pepsi says it has 35mg of sodium which is 1% of the daily allowance and Pepsi Max has 35mg of sodium however that is 2% of the daily allowance.
I forgot to look for 7-Up gold photos.
Oh Sioux City Sarsaparilla...I remember my dad got that through a wholesaler to sell in his store because we couldn't get it in the grocery stores around here. There was also a cream soda by the same company that was more popular around here.

  • @my_little_niche -

I grew up in a town that had an old fashioned drug store with a soda fountain. Those were sodas. I always assumed that soda contained ice cream or eggs.
There is a family in my town that has Fanta as a surname, in fact one of my neighbors in the old neighborhood had that name and she was a penny pinching lady who believe it or not gave out pennies at Halloween. She died sitting on a pile of cash...literally because she was hiding it in her Lazy-Boy. Anyway, they pronounce it Fahn-tah sort of like going to the dentist twice

  • @Rob_of_the_Sky -

Oh see I guess I never got into that Game Fuel so I thought there was only one flavor but it had two different cans, one for Halo and one for WoW. Another reason I never got into it was because I don't play either game.
Totally forgot about that Livewire Mountain Dew. I think I had it once and thought it was regular old Mountain Dew colored orange.
I had one can of that Berries and Cream Dr. Pepper and that was enough for me. I left a case in my Blazer and went out and had a can when I was monitoring recess. Oh it was bad. The next day one of my student's mothers asked to borrow my vehicle so I let her and when she got back she said she hadn't tried that pop so I let her have it all.

  • @nov_way -

Yes, liquid Viagra...sometimes seeing those old pops in the store, like the Throwbacks, gives me awkward boners.

  • @Sionainne -

Since I hate broccoli I never tried that one. I did have a corn on the cob one and it really reminded me of sweet corn with extra butter.
Oh yeah, Purplesaurus Rex...I miss some of those kool aids and Hi-C drinks. Ectoplasm Cooler? Hello, that needs to be brought back. The closest duplication of an ectoplasm cooler is combining lemonade, orange juice and blue raspberry vodka.
The thing with Hubba Bubba was that it was so sweet and actually tasted like when you have a lot of saliva in your mouth when your chewing gum and then you suck down the spit.
I have often wondered if the new Orbitz gum is by the same company.
I am going on a quest within the next few days to see if I can still find Slice and Dr. Slice.
That Lime Ricky looks great. Every once in a while, the Dollar General gets in Nehi in a favorite of flavors. I can't remember if it was Nehi or what but they had this Peach Lemonade this summer and it blew my mind. There was a character on MASH obsessed with Grape Nehi but I can't remember who it was now.
Glad you enjoyed. I'll have to re-post my candy post.

  • @ThatOneBlondeChick -

A friend of mine who traveled in Asia after teaching in China brought that Pepsi Cucumber back. There are some interesting Pepsi concoctions that are only released in foreign markets but with the internet I'm sure there are ways to track them down.

  • @BranmacFeabhail -

I haven't had a regular Classic Coke in ages. I think it's because now I've moved to mostly diet drinks or the store brands. A 12 pack of Coke was like $4 or $5 and the store brand was $2.50.
I've lucked out with my teeth.

  • @Hinase -

some were but then some were pretty good. Crystal Pepsi...if I could get my hands on some I would have it gone in minutes.

  • @stoic_asylum -

I forgot to include an energy drink called Poo-say. I think it was endorsed by Snoop Dogg and they originally put a likeness of President Clinton on the container saying "Get some!" I can't find it but there is an energy drink in the UK named Pussy and MTV has something to do with it's production.
    Glad you enjoyed.

  • @Miss_Vincent -

    I loved those commercials.

  • @nov_way -

So what kind did you get?

  • @adamswomanlost -

Well I am glad you enjoyed. You can reminisce through me on some of these. When a lot of those went off the market I enjoyed the Wisconsin sub-Shasta pop Jolly Good.

  • jones soda has a website my friends order theirs off of. you can even personalize your own sodas now. we have it in some walmarts in the south too.

  • Dr. Jones is still around... a bit harder to find these days...

Yea though, I would love to try all of these sodas that i haven't gotten to try yet.... well all of the non sugarfree ones anyways.... that artifical sugar and I don't get along at all...

Some sodas may be more available or still around overseas more than here, I know that's how it is with some kit kats...

  • unfortunately i haven't seen any of them...But i always wanted to taste coke's flavored products and mountain dew..Maybe when i make it to the stated i will try some of them...

  • OMG, a bottle of that Orbitz was given to me years ago. I thought it was the coolest thing (i didn't realize it was such a big thing at the time). I never opened it, but kept it displayed in my house up until a couple years ago. I still have it in a box somewhere. I wonder if it's worth something...hahaha

  • @stoic_asylum -

I think Bawls may be an acquired taste. If you decide to try it, I recommend getting a regular bottle and a sugarfree one for comparison.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

"There was a character on MASH obsessed with Grape Nehi but I can't remember who it was now."

Radar O'Reilly. He was SO cute! (I don't expect you to appreciate that particular detail, I just can't help saying it. Cuz he was.)

  • @ShamrockLover -

    It is to me...hint hint.

  • You know what else we forgot? RAMUNE!!

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Yeah, I never tried the berries and cream Dr. Pepper. I did try the cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper, and it was alright, but it was a poor substitute for Vanilla Coke (which had been discontinued at the time). I once had a Dr. Pepper with vanilla flavour in it at a Sonic (at Sonic, you can order any drink with a wide variety of flavours to add in), but it was disappointing. Oh, I don't know if you were into Mario in the 90's, but there was Mario soda, which was a neat novelty. There were four varieties of Mario soda based on four different characters from the Mario series (Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Yoshi). There's a little more info about the Mario soda here (including pics).

  • @Sionainne - Oh, I tried a couple of them. There's just something about a straight man drinking something called Bawls that made me shiver.

  • @stoic_asylum -

LOL!! My son said the same thing.

  • yeah man gimmie back that ol mountain dew

  • haha. I don't think you'd be impressed to know that I got 7up, it's little sibling called "crisp-clean refreshing", I think; something with an orange flavour and Dr.pepper! (my very first!!!!) I know, I know. I'm a boring, unadventurous individual who knows nothing about the underground kinds of soda (if there's such a thing). Oh, well! Have a great evening!

  • I miss Surge. And I used to drink Jones soda, I'm not sure if it's still sold where I live.

  • @NightlyDreams -

Thanks, I'm going to haveto look for the personalization feature. I hope they do that for the bottle caps as well. I could see a pop fanatic proposing marriage that way.

  • @CPKviperphoenix -

Or Cheetos, I've seen strawberry and chocolate cheetos overseas.
I think I get a temporary heartburn from pops with certain kinds of artificial sweetener.

  • @ccRowp -

Well I you ever get over here we'll have to enjoy some of these flavored drinks. I'd say I'd keep them but I'd probably end up drinking them a week after I bought them.

  • @ShamrockLover -

You know I think there would be a person who would buy it. Check Ebay.

  • @Sionainne -

Oh yeah, that guy was pretty nasty when he was on match game.
As for Ramune...I should have remembered because the last time I did this one a few people mentioned that drink.

  • @Rob_of_the_Sky -

Thanks for the Mario based pop. I wouldn't have known that because living in rural Wisconsin we didn't see a lot of that stuff. I still remember the Mario brothers cereal and tv show.

There was a 50s style diner near the town where I lived in MN and I remember this because I was explaining to someone that I lost facebook friends because of a joke about that place. The joke was...I noticed a photo of Michael J. Fox next to the cash register so I asked if he enjoyed the shakes. Anyway, this place had Coca-Cola and you could add syrup. I got a lime-coke and it looked nasty but was so tasty. It wasn't quite what I have heard about Sonic but then we don't have Sonics in these part because of all our snow.

  • @Mrs_Polly_Tish -

Ok, you may have the old Mountain Dew, like the stuff with the real sugar and not the artificial crap.

  • @nov_way -

Well I like comparing myself to Buddha so your journey in the world of pop begins with a single can or bottle.

  • @Shining_Garnet -

I keep forgetting to search youtube for the old Surge commercials. I remember basically everyone had a single bottle of Surge and someone yelling "SURGE!" and everyone tried to get to it first.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Yeah, I don't think the Mario soda really took off. I only remember seeing it at Big Lots after it had been discontinued. Big Lots was also where I found Orbitz.

Also if the theory of thispo is correct, we should be turning into defunct sodas soon.

  • Hubba Bubba soda sounds ... disgusting. haha

  • I don't know where I heard it but for awhile it was thought that the "0" Zero drinks were the same as the regular diet drinks...zero calories, the same sweeteeners and ingredients but with extra caffine, possibly an early competition of the energy drinks and the opposite of the caffine free drinks.  Pretty much other than the basics, Coke, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper I would occasionally do the Grapete (sp?)  I have tried the ones that are put out now but they are not the same.  Of course the homegrown soda's were Fizzies :? )

  • @mommachatter -

That's interesting to know about the Zero drinks which explains why I still up and haven't felt like sleeping in ages.
I do remember Coke having an extra drink that contained more caffeine and more vitamins. I tried it and it reminded me of chewable vitamins I had as a child.
Those Fizzies are interesting because they are somewhat like a candy I remember but not quite. These candies were flavored like the pop and when you got to the certain it created all your saliva to foam.

  • @xchinkylaydee -

Now that I think of it, yeah, you're right although I would love to find a can.

  • coffee flavored Coke?  i didn't know there was such a thing!  my two favs in one can?? omg.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

hmmm that's quite interesting with the cheetos....... and yea, basically as far as i'm concerned.... Aspartame and suclrouase/splenda and stuff like that equals poison ,lol

OH yea... for Soda, how about DnL? (7up's attempt at a energy drink were they just turned their logo upside down) I never tasted that one ... but it didn't wind up being around that long anyways

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Lol!! =D but noooo, I still have a headache from all that sugar.

  • I've never drink caffeine so I missed out on the whole big Surge thing. I remember my brother always wanting one though. And the bubble gum one just makes me sick to my stomach with the thought of it. GROSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  • I love Jones Soda. Surge was definitely one of the most popular drinks that is missed around here. My husband was actually doing some research on it last week.

  • @Peridot21 -

Yeah and what's worse is that Pepsi has tried it multiple times with Pepsi Kona and Pepsi Cino

  • @CPKviperphoenix -

Yes...Aspartame is a killer. Back when Myspace was the only form of social networking I happened across a page for Aspartame and there were some amazing facts.

Yes, I mention the dnL. It was pretty popular at my college but I thought it was just regular pop and tasted a lot like Sun Drop or Mountain Dew.

  • @nov_way -

Then maybe I should do a post about all my favorite pain relievers.

  • @JoyousMemoriesPhoto -

I need to go to a bigger grocery store sometime to see if there is Jones in this area.

  • @KickingSheep -

I can still remember the flavor of the bubblegum one and it's making my head hurt

  • Hahaha whoooaaa.... LOL thanks for the pop education! ;) I remember some of those brands. And wow, Pepsi is fighting hard to take over Coca-Cola's #1 spot in the beverage industry. That Chocolate Fudge drink seems ... interesting. And even though I never had it before, the Orbitz drink kind of reminds me of Bubble Tea with the chewy chunks in it. I hardly ever get tapioca balls in my bubble tea because they're, like, in the way of my drink! =P

  • Surgeeeee!!! Omg, this post... this post! AHHHHH!!!! Epic. Kudos, kudos!!!

  • @damiastyx - thank you so much, I remember having to go to Iowa to get Surge or people who came to my school would bring cases to school to sell.  We had a pop black market.
