  • Cover Songs

A few days ago, @leaflesstree posted her music theme for the week and it was cover songs.  I decided I'd try to follow suit and share some of my favorite cover songs.  So I guess this is sort of a cover post.

    1.  "Bohemian Rhapsody" by William Shatner   I love Shatner's musical attempts and that is why I have two of his songs on this list.  Well I don't know if you can call them songs.  They are more like spoken word performance art.  Anyway, he released a new album a while back and I just remembered it while searching for songs from his other album on youtube.  You should really look for his album entitled "Seeking Major Tom".  It's just...awesome.

    2.  "Common People" by William Shatner  Here's my Shatner love and all I can think is that you, dear reader, are in deep Shat.   This was originally performed by Pulp.  I think that they did the music for this and actually did the singing.  I know this album, "Has Been", was produced by Ben Folds and if I remember Folds and Shatner did a duet.  That's something else worth checking out

    3.  "Tomorrow" by Rivers Cuomo  Back in the late summer/early fall I began my career in the ministry and a guy by the name of Tom Anderson started a website called Myspace.  A few months later I have a friend tell me that I should really check out that site because Rivers Cuomo has started uploading solo stuff to his Myspace page.  Well I checked it out, fell in love with the solo work, and created my Myspace account and that was how I entered the world of social networking.  This comes from the musical Annie.  He has a lot of other good solo material including his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

    4.  "Band of Gold" by Afghan Whigs  I stumbled upon this tune back in the days of Napster when I was looking for the original version by Freda Payne.  I love the song to begin with so this is just that much better.

    5.  "We Gotta Get Out of this Place" by Jello Biafra  I really enjoy Biafra.  I know sometimes his politics don't mesh with mine but most of the time we are in tune and this song really summed up my contempt for American government and the original by The Animals was popular during the Vietnam War era especially amongst the soldiers.

    6.  "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley  The original was by Leonard Cohen and I really enjoy that one but Buckley's version gives me goosebumps.  One thing that I've hated about this song is how people nowadays say, "Oh that's the song from Shrek," or "_____ sang that on American Idol."  I think the only versions I've enjoyed were this one, Cohen's, and one that is in Hebrew.

    7.  "D'yer Maker" by Sheryl Crow  This came out when I was a freshman in high school and when I heard about a Led Zeppelin tribute album I was all over it and then when I first heard this song I fell in love with Sheryl Crow.  There is something so arousing about hearing her sing "oh oh oh".  Still drives me wild all these years later.  I apologize because I couldn't find a studio version but this one is good nonetheless

    8.  "Rhinestone Cowboy" by Radiohead  I love the Glenn Campbell original and I love Radiohead so when I heard Radiohead performed this I was in heaven.

    9.  "Nobody Does it Better" by Radiohead  This song was originally done by Carly Simon for a James Bond movie.  This song is one that I've wanted to have as a first dance if I ever get married and it has to be the sexiest song ever written.

    10.  "Paranoid Android" by Weezer  Weezer covering Radiohead?  OH YEAH!  Rainn Wilson turned me on to this and I was thinking of including the cover of "What if God was One of Us" that he did with Weezer but I liked this one better.

    11.  "Whiskey in the Jar" by Metallica  A heavy metal cover of a traditional Irish drinking song.  Oh this got a lot of playtime when I bellied up to the bar at an Irish pub and if it wasn't on the jukebox I'd start singing it myself.

    12.  "Where is My Mind" by Trampled by Turtles  I really love The Pixies but I'll admit I didn't really know who they were during their heyday.  I found out about them because when I was looking up some of my favorite bands I kept seeing The Pixies listed as their inspiration.  I guess Radiohead, Weezer, and Nirvana can't be wrong.  I've also heard covers by City Wolf (Featured in the movie Observe and Report), Nada Surf, and Max Cyrin but this one just gets to me.

Yep, Battle Royale...I think the people who say Hunger Games is original should really check out that movie.

I should've went to see him speak today.  He was in my neck of the woods but I didn't want to play into his homoerotic speaking tour.  He spoke at a lumber yard that specializes in hardwoods.

    Perverts, UNITE!

I had 25 calls on my answering machine promoting Romney for the G.O.P. primary here this coming Tuesday.  I took a survey and said I wouldn't vote for Romney and when asked why I replied, "Magic Underwear".

You know, that's interesting but I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

But then he didn't eat Skittles or drink Arizona Tea

Since I mocked The Hunger Games, I wouldn't want Twilight to feel left out.

Oh, McLovin, you try too hard.

Have a great time period after you read this.

  • Gotta love Battle Royale

  • OH-EM-GEE.

I am so sharing that Napoleon Dynamite pic. Haha.

  • Hallelujah is such a soothing song. Thank you for sharing and I hope you're having a good time, as well.

  • im going to have to come back and spend more time... have a listen or twenty gogb...

  • I so want to see that movie! Its been on my list for awhile... but I didn't end up watching it because I was afraid it was going to be more disturbing than anything. Not that I'm bothered by gore, but I just felt... sick.

Bust considering I just read the hunger games and enjoyed it and don't feel guilty about it, I'm sure I won't feel guilty about watching battle royale and enjoying it. :P

  • TOO MUCH MUSIC!

I watched the Shatner video, and listened to the next track. But, it's a lot, yo.

  • Wow, this is an extensive list. Way better than my pitiful four songs! I think i have something to say about every song, and since I spent like an hour listening to all of these (okay a slight exaggeration), I feel obliged to write an extensive comment. So here goes: The first one is funny. The second one, I like. I don't think I've ever heard the original, but I think I've heard this version before (you probably posted it, lol) Yay for Shatner. :)

I like that version of Tomorrow, awesomely done. I have an uncle who I remember singing "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" periodically. That's a good version of that too. I know Jeff Buckley didn't do the original of "Hallelujah," but for me that's the definitive version. I also have a cover of that by K.D. Lang (she sang it at the Olympics in Canada) and one by Rufus Wainwright. They're okay, but his is the best.

I don't really like Radiohead, to be honest (I know, I probably lose my street cred for that). A friend of mine gave me a copy of their last album, In Rainbows," and I think there's like two songs on there I like, but most of it is boring. Those are good covers though, both by and of them. I do remember the video for Paranoid Android, though I probably saw it a million times before I realized what it was (I don't know how) but I have no idea what the lyrics are. Good version though. Weezer is one of those bands I like in small doses, but I feel like I'm too old for them. ::shrug::

I skipped Sheryl Crow, but I really like that version, too. She does a couple of covers that I've liked, and that one I think it's the accordion that clinches it. Not at all what you'd think of in a Zeppelin song, really, but it totally works. The last two songs I'd never heard before, so I can't compare to the original.

Plus side of not having a landline - few telemarketers and no political calls. :)

  • @leaflesstree - & gogb...  i'd heard about this - but stumbled across it...

  • I want you to know that if I die from this heartattack I'm having (apparently they charged me $1094 for a drug test and it's out of network.... I died listening to Shatner!

  • HOLY... Shatner!  ... that was awesome!

  • @npr32486 - yeah I know I sound elitist complaining but I just get sick of hearing how The Hunger Games is such an original concept and also how one news agency is claiming it's a warning about big government.

  • @Xbeautifully_broken_downX - glad you enjoyed, I know I mentioned about how I hate sounding elitist when talking about The Hunger Games and Battle Royale but I hate Twilight and not only the movies but the books.  It's just poor writing...sorry if you're a Twilight fan.

  • @nov_way - yes, it is so peaceful, the only version I've heard that doesn't sound peaceful is that Hebrew version but then the Hebrew language isn't that comforting.

  • @xplorrn - sorry for going overboard but I had a much longer list and thought an even dozen was the least I could share.
Oh and that covers project, I looked on it because I was always under the assumption that the song Runaway Train was a cover.  All these years later I'm proven wrong.

  • @raspberryjade - yeah Japanese movies tend to have a lot of gore in them, ever hear of Takashi Miike?

  • @Unstoppable_Inner_Strength - yeah I went a little overboard but as I said in a comment above, my original list was much longer and it was difficult to narrow it down to these few songs.  Be thankful I didn't include any Richard Cheese.

  • @leaflesstree - I think I originally had about 40 songs and over the course of the week I narrowed it down to these.
Rufus Wainwright sang the version of "Hallelujah" in Shrek but there is something about it and how so many people were exposed to the song and think his version is the only version.
I think Radiohead and Weezer are acquired tastes.  I think Weezer fits well with me because it was once described as "nerd rock" by Henry Winkler no less.
The Metallica song may not be considered a cover but more or less a rendition.  See that song is traditional folk song and probably has no real original.  Probably every Irish band has a version of it but I really do like Metallica's the best.
The Pixies are very good.  It's almost like they could be around today.  Their music has no time to it.

  • @Peridot21 - glad you enjoyed, I love his rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.  I heard about that album a long time ago and when I heard that song was going to be on it I was sort of upset but then I hear it and I sit there in disbelief and had to listen to it another 5 times in a row.  The video is pretty cool as well.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - it's all good! i wanted to be able to listen to them all - trust me, i know what you mean about 'sharing them all'...  well musically....

  • I love that "Jesus Wore a Hoodie".  That is priceless.

By the way, that quote by Santorum at the top  about seeing eye to eye with the Taliban, is not a legitimate quote of his.  I thought it sounded familair but I didn't think it was that specific, so I checked.  It's a parody.  I don't mind seeing it as a parody, but it shouldn't be presented as an actual quote.

  • @curiousdwk - well thanks for the heads up, I do know that he had an interesting quote in a speech he gave in Wisconsin just the other day.  It sounds like he was about to call the president the n-word

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - still alive... but barely.  I sat in my car last night while a wind storm that rocked my car massively... I thought, atleast my life insurance will pay the bill if I die.
