  • Homework Assignment 8/29

Class, I read and graded your last assignment.  A lot of you improved with the explanation as to why you took a certain position.  That is great but some of you show room for improvement.  You get an A.  Now don't rest on your previous grades.  There still is work to do and room for improvement.

    Here's this week's assignment:

This week I am going easy on you.  You will only have to list the bands for each decade however if you want extra credit you may tell me why you selected that particular band.

OK, class, it's time to get to work.

  • I'd have to ponder that.

  • Best to capture that period over all or best in our own minds?

  •    THE Beachboy

  • 60s: - Iron Butterfly.  LSD for the ears, man, LSD for the ears...

70s: - Black Sabbath.  Reason I own a guitar.  (Though I find it obligatory to mention Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem, and by extension, the golden voiced Leprechaun Brothers.)

80s: - Alph Lyla, or Alfh Lyra, or Alpha Lyla depending on your interpretation of アルフ・ライラ.  Responsible for the soundtrack of games like Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Strider, Final Fight and Street Fighter II.  Recovering health from eating roast turkey, beef, or chocolate bars found in smashed trash cans & oil drums can just wouldn't be the same with out their music.

90s: - Metallica.  Occasional plagiarism & P2P related hypocracy aside, they rocked the 90's like... err... a hurricane...? :P

2000: - Uhhhhhhhh... The Lonely Island.  Three words... er... nouns.  Natalie. Portman. Rap.

    That's my story & I'm stickin' to it. :P

  • wow I will be getting a very bad grade on this one...

60s i guess the beach boys
70s i have no idea of a band in the 70s
80s was new kids on the block around in the 80s i think that's the only band i listened to in the 80s
    90s i liked guns n roses
00's 12 stones (it happens to be playing in my ipod right now)

Im probably going to have to get my parents to sign a note for this assignment..

  • Just one for each decade? That's too hard! (That's what she said.)

    Ok, I'll try.

    60's:  Jimi Hendrix  (close 2nd - Cream)

    70's:  Black Sabbath (close 2nd - Zep)

    80's:  Metallica (close 2nd - Slayer)

    90's: Primus (close 2nd - Pearl Jam)

    2000's: Leaves' Eyes

  • Well, you said bands (not solo artists - which made it somewhat harder for me), so here goes:

60s - Mamas and the Papas
    70s - Fleetwood Mac
80s - Starship!  Haha, JUST KIDDING.  Poor Grace.  Anyway, I'll go with Journey (Duh!)
    90s - Nirvana
00's - I *really* wanted to say Sufjan Stevens, but he releases work as a solo artist.  SO, I'll say PJ Harvey (tehnically, it's a trio lol).

  • 60s - ? Mark and the Mysterians

    70s - Ramones

80s - Echo and the Bunnymen

    90s - Pegboy

    00s - Brian Jonestown Massacre

  • THE best? Oho this will be hard. Lessee...

The 60s: I guess that's supposed to be the Beatles, though I'm partial to the Who (though they crossed into the 70s, didn't they?) I like so much of that hippie rock it's hard to pick just one.

70s: America. That's the only one I can think of right now. :) (Does Elton John count? He's not really a band.)

80s: Duran Duran. Um...yeah, that's the only band I can think of that wasn't a one-hit-wonder, lol. Dire Straits, I love them. Money For Nothing was in the 80s, though that's not my favorite song by them.

90s: I remember Nirvana was real big, but I kind of think they're overrated (ducks tomatoes). Greenday came out in that era, and they're okay, even if all their songs sound the same after a while. I like Pearl Jam. Red Hot Chili Peppers (though again a lot of their songs sound the same). Oh, and don't forget the Boy Band Craze with NSync and Backstreet Boys and all their imitators. (Girls I know used to fight over them).

2000s: Gee, this is when I stopped listening to music on the radio, lol. A lot of the 90s bands carried over into the 00s (except Nirvana, since he was dead). I know there was some good stuff, though. :P

PS: You win bonus points for not using the apostrophe in the years. :)

  • 60's - Pink Floyd. Welcome to the Machine (Wish You Were Here)

Jimi Hendrix. Rendition of 'Sunshine of your Love' Joan Jett. Rendition of 'Crimson and Clover'
70's - The Eagles. Hotel California (Self Titled)
80's - Michael Jackson. Billie Jean + Thriller (Thriller)   Dirty Diana + Smooth Criminal (Bad)
    90's - Silverchair. Tomorrow (Frogstomp)
00's - Thirsty Merc. In the Summertime (Self Titled)The 00's have been great for Aussie bands/musicians and I could name hundreds of my current favourites.... But I won't. (Potential Blog Idea?)

  • 60's- The Who, The Beatles, Mamas and the Papas and the Beach Boy, Pink Floyd, Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, The Supremes, The Temptations and the Doors

70's-Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Queen, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith

80s- Duran Duran, Poison, Van Halen, Guns n Roses, Journey

90s-Nirvana, Nsync, Back Street Boys, LFO, Green Day, Pearl Jam

2000s-Coldplay, Gorillaz, Maroon 5, Keane, Train

  • 60's- Velvet Underground

    70's- Kraftwerk

    80s- The Human League

    90s- Nine Inch Nails

    2000s- Röyksopp

  • @Blackspidertat - oh yeaaa Velvet Underground!!! ^____^

just from my favorites (not extensive knowledge):

    60s - Velvet Underground
70s - I don't know any... I don't like this period... ok maybe Ramones lol
80s - Jesus and Mary Chain
    90s - I guess Skinny Puppy
2000s - Raveonettes? Black Ryder? BRMC?

@Paul_Partisan - wow I like your bands too!
