Motivation
I still haven't done my New Year's Resolution or Prediction post. I did get around to looking at the predictions I made last year which was somewhat intriguing especially how I saw how the election playing out. I'll get to posting it in a day or so. Last night I didn't sleep because I was reading. I am going through a list of books that have been banned by school districts and libraries across the United States. Hard to imagine in a country of free speech that there would be banned books. The first book on my list was The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo. DiCamillo is currently a Minnesota resident and spoke at my college. I enjoy her writing style although two of the three books I have read by her have dealt with the same topic. I don't see why this book was banned.
The next book on the list was The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. The book is about a Jewish girl who is apathetic to her family's struggles in the Holocaust and her own Jewish roots. She ends up being transported back to 1940s Poland and then the concentration camps. I found it hard to put this book down. I could fully understand why this one might be banned. It dealt with some mature themes and had graphic depictions of the concentration camps but how can you not be graphic with that topic. I saw the Hallmark movie featuring Kirsten Dunst but that movie didn't do the book any justice.
I then had a book called Killing Mr. Griffin. It was written by Lois Duncan who has numerous books out including I Know What You Did Last Summer, the basis for that one movie. Killing Mr. Griffin is about a group of students who plot to kill their English teacher because he is very difficult. There were some funny lines in the book because it was written in 1978 which dealt with the students' plan to kill him. "No one would suspect us because students never would kill their teacher." My how things have changed! It got me wondering if my students wanted me dead. Well there was that one time when a 5th grader asked the DARE officer to shoot me with his taser because he wanted to see what would happen. That scared me. Then there was the kindergartener that almost strangled me when he started swinging with my necktie. I am going to have to go to the movie rental joint because there is a adaptation of this book starring Saved by the Bell's Mario Lopez.
After I finished Killing Mr. Griffin last night, I had to start another book. I took out Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. Chris Crutcher is the author. I feel bad because I read this book straight through cover to cover in one sitting. I understand why this one has been banned. It has some harsh language, features themes of child abuse, abortion, eating disorders, and it does feature some interesting views on Christianity. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I don't know if I could ever use it in a grade school but in a high school most definitely. There is a movie adaptation in the works. Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, besides being on banned lists, has made lists that claim this is one of the 100 most important books for teens.
Tonight, after this post, I plan on starting a book called David and Jonathan by Cynthia Voigt. It sounds interesting so why not.Well I need to get motivated to do my New Year's post.
Well I hope you found the motivation that you needed to make it through the week.

I enjoy reading forbidden books.
The starting picture = hah!
Great project, maybe I will try that this year.
Here is a T-Shirt for you
And Bill Murray is right, I do suck.
These are great.
I hate Fox News. Bleh.
I was super into Lois Duncan for a couple of years. But after a while it felt like the storylines were repetive.
WHAT ABOUT BOB?!
Thanks, I really needed that to push me through the day...School started, bleh...

My list is currently children's literature. I sort of want to get some of these books in my teaching plans.

I have to be honest. I am going through children's books. It is funny how those are the ones that get banned first. I suppose we don't want our children's minds to be ruined by seeing words like shit or fuck but it's ok that they hear those in their music. They just shouldn't be reading it.
Did you ever see Freaks and Geeks? I think every episode had at least one comment about Bill Murray.
I need to get that t-shirt now.

That was my first Lois Duncan book. I just learned that she wrote I Know What You Did Last Summer. At least she had nothing to do with the sequels.
FOX News...I love how Olbermann on MSNBC always refers to it as either Fixed News of FOX Noise. There is one show I try to catch from time to time but lately I have been reading or sleeping instead. It's Red Eye usually on at 2 in the morning. Just a bunch of comedians reviewing the daily headlines.

Never watched Freaks or Geeks, I'm just a huge Murray fan. I think I am one of three people that even liked the Man Who Knew Too Little.

Funny story about that movie...when I was a kid there was a strange pastor that lived near me and he had some strange kids, well they are still strange but anyway, they had their entire living room decorated with What About Bob posters and photos. It was very strange. They even went out and bought a film reel and they would have monthly screenings at the church.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
Uhhh.... "Strange" isn't quite the word.
@spicyhotcoffee -
Oh that sucks. I hope it does get you through the day.

Freaks and Geeks was a great comedy but NBC dinked around with the time slot and put it on a night that the target audience usually doesn't watch tv.
I need to see that movie. My friends always thought I was weird because I liked Bill Murray's portrayal as Hunter S Thompson better than Johnny Depp's.
Your motivation posts always leave me in stitches. Even Bill Murry thinks you suck! I've been keeping to my plan to read more, but not as much as you . . . last night I fell asleep with the book open . . .
@jacksoncroons -
I couldn't believe that Bill Murray thinks I suck. I mean I have supported his career from when he was the wise-ass in stripes to the grey haired playboy looking at a nude teenager in Broken Flowers. Oh and I think I will support him if he is in Ghostbusters 3.
The library called me tonight and they found 9 more books on my list. I have a month to read 14 books. They found a book for me called The Cay which is such a great book. I taught it when I was student teaching and I think the kids actually loved the book.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
I mean, some of the other ones were good. I'm sure. ha. this was ages ago. Idk even really watch the news. but i know enough about fox sucking nut
Regarding banned books. Have you read And Tango Makes Three? To think this was banned is amazing what they (the book Nazis) will do in their search for only the pure and stomping out the putrid.
Loved the signs/sayings. Especially the Internet Kaon.

I hadn't heard of And Tango Makes Three but I will have to see if my library has it. Last night I got a shipment of books and I was talking to the librarian about this list I have. She wondered where I got these titles and I told her that these books have been banned in places all over America. She was saying that they have gotten some controversial books in and instead of people picketing and boycotting, they simply check out the book and never return it. Some much for that thing called freedom of speech.
I love that comparison pic. I once met a girl that made that same claim but she didn't like it when I asked for a comparison.
