Sun Dogs
I made mention of this in a recent post and I finally have some time to write about it.
Sun Dogs are a phenomena that occur when sunlight is reflected or refracted by ice crystals in the cirrus clouds. Often it appears as two "mock suns" on either side of the real sun. Sometimes however there is only one visible sun. The Plains Indians used this phenomena to predict weather. Usually when a sun dog is spotted that means a drop in temperature is on the way. I saw them the other day when it was about 30 and two days later it dropped below zero. I remember during this summer's heat wave, I spotted them and a couple of days later it rained and significantly cooled off. I have no clue as to why they are called sun dogs but my assumption is that when there are two on either side of the sun it sort of appears to be a dog's face.
This photo is taken outside of New Ulm, MN. See the two "fake" suns? That is the sun dog. You can also notice a a little rainbow around the reflection.
This is a single sun dog.
Here's another example of sun dogs at sunset.
This is a sun dog at the South Pole. The sun was blocked out for the cameraman's protection. Anyway notice the pronounced rings and rainbows.
Sometimes the sun dog will appear above the sun during a sunrise thus causing a false sunrise. This photo is taken from my favorite place in the world. Underneath all the fog is a city and the Mississippi River.Sometimes I bitch and moan about the cold weather but then I get to see these beautiful events so I guess that makes up for the -40 mornings.

Amazing!
I think I've never seen something like that. Your photo is amazing!
Those are truly beautiful, however, having survived weather like you are going through now all I can say is "No, no the beauty does not make up for the frozen scrotum"
Dude, that's awesome!
that is cool.
Those are beautiful pictures!!
but -40?? Yikes!!
@bosefius - hahahaha!!
@msbutterfli -
You laugh, the wife just cries
@nattata -
The photos come from wikipedia however they are from where I have lived or attended school except the one at the South Pole. I love that phenomena. It always reminds me of Star Wars or something because it looks like we have 3 suns.
@storyslut -
Yes, it is. I guess there can be a benefit to living in this cold climate.
@bosefius -
Balls shrinkingly cold...sort of like Groundhog Day, if they "drop" and stay down spring is on the way but if they go back up you have more winter on the way.
@MrsMok -
Thank you. It is fun looking for these which seem to be more accurate than the weather reports.
@SpongeBobScaredyPants -
Thanks. Sometimes nature has those little things that pop up when you are suffering from extreme heat or cold.
@msbutterfli -
Yeah -40 it is pretty nasty. We had that here a couple weeks ago. They closed everything and I just stayed home and was warm and relaxed.
hey when you posted these pic.. I never thought these are something special and rare? are they?...
cuz it's not exception to see them over here..
I always thought them to be normal..
@tweeny_tear -
Well they don't occur that often around here. I know I see them from time to time but it isn't that often.
The pictures were amazing. Hm... thanks for my science lesson of the day. I never heard of a sun dog before.
@thekeyhole -
No problem, I never really knew teh science behind them until I wrote this. I just knew that when I saw them to expect a cool down.
those pictures made me shiver. :]
@M00nDoll -
Hmmm I guess they do.
Beautiful pictures! I've never seen one of those. I hope I do. One thing I have seen though here in the South, although its been awhile since I witnessed one, is the electrical storms. I don't know too much about them, but its just lightning, no rain, no thunder, just lightning in the sky. It's pretty cool...
@spicyhotcoffee -
I love electrical storms. When I was living out in Little House on the Prairie country those were very common in the summer time. It was so beautiful. One of the least common occurrences I have witnessed is a thunder and lightning in a snow storm. That is freaky.
That was really interesting! Thanks for the info, Science Guy!

Just thought that I would share.
That's amazing. I guess that would make things more bearable. =]
And my dad Loves Marvin the Martian. He has all kinds of stuff with him on it. Sweet. My teacher is so amazingly boring, I honestly day-dream for and hour and 15 minutes. Score. At least I was awake.
I have no clue why I said 'bearable'. Oh wow. I meant 'bareable'. Lo siento. That's what day-dreaming does to you.
Great post! Here in the South, we have little chance of seeing sun dogs. Along the coast, we do get to see the fabled 'Green Flash' when the sun sets over the Gulf. But getting a picture of the green flash is next to impossible.
