  • Ghost Stories

I know have written a great deal about one of the bars I frequent.  The bar is called The Old Baraboo Inn located in Baraboo, WI.  I know I have down at least 4 entries about my experiences with this establishment.  Once again I thought I would share.

The first time I visited, I went with two close friends, whose identities will be protected by the monikers Ozzie and Harriet.  Well we arrived and upon entry I noticed a strange suffocating vibe.  I also noticed there were only two other people in the bar besides my party and the bartender.  It was as if there was an unwelcome feeling.  Something didn't want us there.  We ordered our beer and were just still on edge because of this suffocating feeling.

We started talking with the bartender, and me being as ballsy as I am, asked the bartender if it was true that this place, The Old Baraboo Inn, was haunted.  He regaled us with tales of the origins of the bar and what it used to be.  It was very interesting to hear this guy tell the history of this one building in the old circus town.  It definitely wasn't the type of history I learned about in grade school.  Wisconsin was a wild place back in the 1860s and Baraboo was one of the wildest towns.  Besides being winter home and headquarters for the Ringling Brothers circus, Baraboo was also a meeting point for railroads from Chicago and Minneapolis.  Needless to say, Baraboo had a nefarious reputation.  The Old Baraboo Inn was one of the places where that reputation was earned.

Listening to the stories about the gun fights and brothels and prostitutes really made me feel strange.  I started to get chills followed by hot flashes.  It was strange.  The owner then stopped mid-sentence and said to look at his arms.  The hairs were standing on end and he explained that there must be a spirit around.  Now I was getting antsy.  He also told us stories of the renters he has lost over the years.  In particular one lady who has a son with autism.  The son would wake in the middle of the night and have conversations with people who weren't there.  Listening to more and more stories about the place just was really making me feel a connection to the spirits.  Now, some of you may be asking yourselves, "But I thought this guy was educated."  Yes, I am educated but there are just some things out there that I can't explain.  I do believe there are spirits.  I do not know if they are actually a person or an imprint that the person has left behind.

As I was drinking my Creamy Dark, I felt a presence.  At first I thought nothing of it until I felt intense pressure around my throat.  It wasn't a light grab or a brush, this was almost as if I was being choked.  Of course I wasn't choking but I felt like something was trying to choke me.  Then one of the motion sensor machines came on and no one went by it.  Harriet was gripping Ozzie's leg so hard that he had fingerprints.  This of course was after the owner told us that we were sitting over one of the most active parts of the basement.  We decided to wrap up our night at the Old Baraboo Inn soon thereafter.

My experience the second time was quite different.  When I entered there was no heaviness hanging in the air inside the bar but it felt warm and welcoming.  We sat down and had our $2 Creamy Darks (although now due to recession the price is $2.50).  The bartender remembered Ozzie and myself which was an awesome feeling that he remembered us after not having been in there since September; Harriet did not come because of the first experience.  We talked for the longest time and nothing happened.  Then out of nowhere a motion sensor went off and no one set it off.  We just laughed as we noticed extreme temperature changes and the hair on our arms standing on end.  As the night progressed and the talks of the supernatural and unknown went all over the place I brought up something I saw on Paranormal State.  A house was haunted because of human remains on the property.  I asked the bartender if, because of all the gunfights, there might have been people buried in the basement because of the amount of paranormal activity.  He didn't answer but reminded me that the place was a former bordello so there were probably remains of fetuses and unwanted babies buried in the basement.  I nodded and then I felt what can best be described as an electrical current grab my leg and run up my back and into the back of my skull.  Just then I started tearing up and crying.  It was unbelievable.  It was like something entered me to make me feel the pain that had taken place at this location.

I stopped the crying and got myself together and decided to make a pit-stop.  Once I got up and started walking toward the bathroom I had the feeling that I was being followed.  I walked faster to get to the destination.  I entered and made sure to lock the door but as I was going I couldn't help but feel I was being watched.  I looked over my should and saw nothing and then I looked down and then I felt a hand on my shoulder and that was it.  I got out of there as soon as possible and went back to the bar where I started to have an asthma attack.  The rest of the night I just felt so weird, like I had just made contact with the spirits.  No, not the alcoholic spirits but something out there that is unexplained.  The reason I knew it couldn't be alcohol induced was because I had switched over to Coke after having only 2 beers.  Well the night progressed and we decided to call it a night.

One of the next times I went to the Old Baraboo Inn was on Halloween.  I was hoping that something spooky would happen because of this holiday.  Nothing happened to me or Ozzie, but something did happen.  The original post I did about this visit, I mentioned how these ladies dressed as pirates sat down next to us.  Well little did I know at that time they would provide some great photographic evidence of a haunting.  Apparently after Ozzie and I left the "pirates" started having problems with their instant camera.  It was going off by itself.  When they developed the film it showed that pictures were in fact taken and that there was a smokey presence in front of the lens.  Now one might venture that someone was smoking.  No, none of them smoke and the camera was next to the ashtray and one can see that there is no cigarette in the ash tray.

Then my friend, the Croatian Sensation, came for a visit.  Ozzie and I took him to visit the Old Baraboo Inn.  Nothing happened to me that evening.  Then the next time the Croatian Sensation came to visit we went again and this time there was a paranormal group conducting an investigation.  They had collected EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) and had some sort of electronic magnetic finder that sensed where there may be presences.  They interviewed me because of the two experiences I had so someday whenever they publish their findings, I may be mentioned in this book.

This past week, the Croatian Sensation returned along with his wife and child.  We decided to go to our haunt and see what was up.  When I entered, I felt a strange presence once again.  I sat at the bar and started feeling weird.  My face felt like it was on fire but my arms felt like they were ice cold but they were warm to the touch.  We heard more stories of occurrences from the bartender including the tale of a Friday the 13th wedding reception where 3 different people saw an apparition as well as more photos being taken and having a smokey presence appear in the photo.  One such photo was of the bride and two of her bridesmaids.  It appeared as if they were being engulfed with this smoke.  None of them were smoking.  As for the apparition, the owner said how he put his special baked beans on the buffet and had to go back to the kitchen for a spoon.  When he returned there was a man dressed as a cowboy looking at the beans.  The owner turned around and the person had vanished.  Then another bartender went to get something on the buffet and he saw the man dressed as the cowboy staring at the beans.  He went to get the owner but before he could say anything it disappeared.  Then a member of the wedding party came to the owner and asked, "IS there supposed to be a guy dressed like a cowboy here?"  The owner said he would take care of it.  This is strange because as I mentioned earlier there were gunfights and supposedly a few guys were killed an buried at this establishment and another guy from the old days got drunk and fell down the stairs.  Is the apparition him?  Who knows but as I already said there was an EVP.  One of the paranormal researchers asked, "I hear there are cowboys here, where are they?"  They clearly pick up, "Here's a boy."  No one else in the room.

The owner also talked about a skeptic who saw a little girl playing around in the back room and that made her run screaming from the bar.  Another patron brought his little child into the bar and she asked, "Daddy are all those kids supposed to be hear?"  The father looked and saw nothing.  The little girl then asked if she could go play and the father gave her the affirmative.  A few minutes later he looks at his daughter dancing in the area where the EVP was collected.  It wasn't like a simple kid dance, no, it was as if she was dancing and locking arms like in a square dance type deal.  She was laughing and giggling.

The Croatian Sensation brought his son into the bar.  He went nuts.  He was running everywhere, laughing, and having a grand old time.  We didn't think nothing of it until he started waving and saying, "Buh-bye, buh-bye!"  Then as the night was winding down, the owner came out to talk with us and that is when I got hit.  I started feeling an electric current all around me.  I went to the bathroom.  As I walked through the back room, in the area where the little girl was spotted, where the cowboy was spotted, where the EVP was collected, and where the other little girl was playing, I walked through an ice-cold spot.  There were no air conditioners running.  I went through this ice spot and just felt sick.  I went into the bathroom and just felt ill.  I came out and the spot was gone.  At the bar, I started feeling the electricity and I was feeling like my face was on fire despite being ice cold.  Then something hit me in the chest.  It caused me to have an asthma attack.  I felt as if I was being attacked.  We soon left.  I am anxious to go back to the Old Baraboo Inn.

If only I knew more bloggers in my area.  I would plan to have a Xanga meet and greet at this bar.  Oh and for the under 21 crowd, this is Wisconsin so you'll be safe.  If anyone ever visits a place called Wisconsin Dells, I'm not far away and neither is the Old Baraboo Inn.  Let's have ourselves a ghost-hunting expedition.

This is the Croatina Sensation with his son.  You may have to enlarge this but if you look at the ceiling fan and the deerhead directly under it there is a strange spot.  It wasn't there when I snapped the photo.

I thought maybe I could catch something in the dining area and dance floor but I didn't.  Look at the TV.  You may have to enlarge.  Above the man on the left there is another strange circle.

The owner calls this guy "The Nightwatchman".  He always freaks me out when I go through that area.

This photo is of that one active area I mentioned.  Where I am standing is about where I walked through the spot that was ice-cold.  He does have an air-conditioner back there but it was not running and definitely not running during the winter when some of these other occurrences took place.  Yes there is another strange dot but that is actually there.  He had a clock on the wall so the paint hadn't faded.

    I hope you enjoyed...seriously...Xanga meet-up?

  • "No, not the alcoholic spirits but something out there that is unexplained."

Made me laugh :] But yeah. Sounds kinda weird. I probably wouldn't go there...well I'm not old enough to, but still. It makes me uneasy just looking at the pictures :P

  • I will have to visit the Old Baraboo Inn, and would try to attend a Xanga meetup if one was held there, schedule permitting of course!

  • could be those free floating pockets of energy ( ghost ) or just dust on the lens?

  • Cool story!

I would love to visit the place and have a talk with those ghosts!  Seriously.  I have a couple of ghosts in my home: a little girl and an old woman whom I've learned to carry on regular conversation with using a pendulum board the little girl guided me in creating.  Long story.  Sounds crazy, I know.  Anyway, they're not scary or disturbing to live with in any way. They're very much ordinary people (other than the little girl being smart for her age) except for two things: I can't see or hear them (though other members of my family have glimpsed them out the corner of their eyes), only sense them now and then, and they don't seem to have any awareness of time.  The little girl, for instance, when asked what year it is, will say it's 1986, which is, I assume, the year of her death - something else she doesn't seem aware of, but she does recall the final episode that probably caused it: her father accidentally backed over her with the car when she was playing in the drive way.  The driveway slopes steeply down to the garage door.

Anyway, since I've gotten very good with the pendulum, I've been longing to find out what other ghosts in other places have to say about themselves, explore their lives past and how much awareness they actually have of the present.  I think it would be really interesting.  Wisconsin is such a long way away though!  Wonder if there's any way I could talk my hubby into it?  Must work on that!  Must find other excuses to visit Wisonsin to make it more interesting for him.  Xanga meet up and talking to ghosts would be interesting enough for me.

  • aaaah creepy! >__<

  • Um did you use flash to capture these images? Because sometimes whitish spots appear on photos because of the flash. I don't doubt your experiences as you narrated them. I do believe that spirits do exist. I'm just not so sure about the pictures.

  • If I'm ever in Wisconsin I will totally look you up!  I have theatre friends that formed a paranormal group her in PA but I have yet to go on an outing with them.  I LOVE both Parnanormal State and Ghost Hunters--Ghost Hunters was recently near here in Gettysburg.  All of my paranormal encounters thus far have been instant feelings of nausea...  Thanks for sharing your experiences!

  • Orbs.
I believe in ghosts. I have some pretty great stories.
Im scared of ghosts soo they arent my best memories. lol

  • your second picture definitely has some sort of apparition. i see little orbs in many pictures. most people don't pay attention to them thinking they are just dust. i happen to have a picture with a blue and a picture with a purple orb though and i'm pretty darn certain dust doesn't change color like that.
my philosophy is ghosts/spirits are basically the same as live people. they can be good or evil. so watch your back.
i'd be a little worried about the cuasing of the asthma attack though. i personally wouldn't go back if it caused that unless you think it maybe caused by the tension of the situation and not the spirit acting up.
i know i have some weird views.

  • Yikes!  Creepy!  If I'm even in WI, I'll definately let you know so that we can meet up at this haunted bar.  Those mysterious "spots" are called "orbs" by ghost-hunting pros and are supposedly concentrated paranormal energy.  Orbs used to often be discounted as flaws in the film or developing process, but since everything is done digitally now, orbs cannot be explained by that.  Next time you visit my site, click to view my tags and look for "orbs".  I've got some pretty awesome orb shots and a small tale of my Halloween 2005 celebration.  I believe that ghosts and spirits are real.  I've had way too many encounters not to!  lol  I've only had a camera with me that Halloween in 2005, but boy have I seen and felt my share of freaky phenomenon.  This was an interesting read.  Thanks!  <3 SuZ

  • OMG!!! I'm sorry, I wish I could read this post, but I cannot!! I skipped down to the pictures, and already I started sweating nervously after I read the caption of your friend holding his son and sneaked a peak at the spot in the picture you mentioned!! Ahhh!! Can't do it...!! I know myself well enough to know that I'll be up all night thinking about it and imagining things!! >_< Probably because I really do believe in those things.

  • Oh, and one of my brothers friends said that he's also seen spirits as well, but it was in the form of an orb, a ball of light... And he's not the only one who's seen these orbs either; apparently a friend of a friend has also seen them as well.
... Okay, I read the first paragraph and one sentence in another, and yeah I totally know what you mean when you say you can feel a presence... I'm a really sensitive person, and so any kind of "disturbance" I can feel it physically. Example: Even if I have headphones on while listening to music loudly, my ears will literally perk up at the slightest noise, if all else is quiet.

  • Hum, I remember reading this story before ;) and man, I would like to get there at least once in my life.

    @mZdejavuZ -

    LOL, scaredy cat!

  • @kachino -

    LOL!! It's too true!! >_<

  • @FallenReign -

See the fun thing with Wisconsin bars is that if you are under 21 and have someone willing to vouch for you that is of legal age then you can sign a book that basically says that if you get in trouble you can't come after the bar to pay your fines or for filing a lawsuit. But yeah, it is a crazy place. I always say I don't know if I go back because it seems like I get attacked but I still go because it is such a great conversation piece.

  • @lonelywanderer2 -

Yes yes...I was going to write up a fake Xanga meet at a small town near the bar. The town has a camp that trains people to speak with the dead. One time they went into this bar and came out screaming because of what the spirits were saying to them.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Rofl wow. That's amazing. I would go there once, if I lived or was visiting that area. Just for the experience :P

  • @cappucinos -

Hahaha...I checked my camera before I took the photos. That is one thing I check when I go in there to make sure that I am not just seeing dust. In the event that it was merely dust, it doesn't really explain why in the ten pictures or so in between those that there isn't any specks on the photo.

  • @Ampbreia -

Wow...that is crazy. I think I have a couple spirits in my house. One is my cat that I had for 18 years before I had to put him down. Also I think my grandfather is here. He will walk down the stairs and look at me and then walk back upstairs or at least that is what I feel.

I have had other crazy experiences. For instance about a week after one of my grandmothers died I think she came to our house where she lived before she died and my cat as mentioned before was in her chair. He started purring and acting as if someone was scratching his head. I look briefly and there she was and he started licking at what would have been her hand.

  • @MomoLikesChoco -

Yes it is very creepy. I should start going during the day.

  • @flashbulb100w -

I can't remember if I had the flash on for those. I know at one point I did turn it on and tried to take some photos but it would flash and nothing would turn up. It was as if something was blocking the camera. It is such a strange place. I forgot to mention how one of the TV paranormal investigators came in and didn't want to do a show about the place because of all the spirits. He claims that somewhere in the bar is an area where the spirits cross over to the other side.

  • @MEluvCH -

I think one of the creepiest experiences in my life was when my grandmother started seeing Native Americans walking in her backyard. Her house sat near where they had one of their camps. Anyway there was supposedly a large battle near there and people see spirits walking around in that area dress in the style of the Native Americans. A friend and I went and tried to camp out but after an hour it just felt so intense and suffocating that we had to get out of there.

  • @whoaaa_electro -

There are many stories I have and have heard. For instance in the town where I call my second home there is another haunted bar and also a haunted haunted house. Yes, the haunted house has ghosts. There is also a person I know that had a run in with a guy dressed in all black and was riding a black horse that had red eyes. The area he was near has a rock formation called The Devil's Hitching Post. It got the name because so many people have seen that apparition.

  • @NightlyDreams -

It is some crazy stuff but I probably will only stop going if something great happens to me like I break a bone or get slashed. I have heard of people getting cut up by spirits or demons. Oh and breaking bones...well in a town over there is another haunted bar and a friend's girlfriend was bartending by herself one night. She had gotten everyone out and locked everything up. She was the only one there. She checked a cooler and saw she needed a case of beer so she had to go to the basement. When she was at the top of the stairs she felt something push her and she fell and broke an arm. No one there.

  • @VioletMoonDancer7 -

Thank you...I will have to check out your site. Some of the pictures the owner keeps at the bar of other stuff is amazing. For instance in one picture taken of his eating area/ dance floor it appears as if there is a woman dancing. I don't remember if I mentioned that in the post but there is this alleged prostitute or madam that will appear at certain times and many of those times happens when a certain song is playing on the juke box. The song was "The House is a Rockin" by Stevie Ray Vaughn. The owner couldn't figure out why she would make appearances during this song. He did research and found that there was a prostitute that was murdered on the premises in the year 1903. Well then a little while later he was having work done on his juke and that song was song 3 on disc 19 so to play it people had to type in 1903.

  • @mZdejavuZ -

Wow...I didn't know my writing could have this effect on people. I won't be mean like Kachino.

  • @kachino -

yes, you read elements of this story before. I took parts of all my previous experiences and combined them with the new experiences and stories.

  • Wow, that 1903 thing is really creepy too.  Here's a link to that specific post I told you about...  http://violetmoondancer7.xanga.com/382665642/halloween-and-spirit-photos/

    Enjoy!  <3 SuZ

  • @FallenReign -

Wisconsin is a strange place when it comes to drinking laws. One law is that if a couple is married and one of the people in the couple is underage, as long as they are with the spouse then it is all right to drink. I have had about 50 wives throughout the course of my life.

  • @VioletMoonDancer7 -

Yes it is...thanks for the link.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

i've seen something similar shown on tv on one of the shows on paranormal. i wonder now if they were telling your friends story.

  • Hey that's a good read. I'd be very interested to check out the bar, but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon. I'm gonna rec this old post in anticipation of Halloween's fast approach.

  • Freaky! And I believe you. Hubby and I can both "feel" emotions of people past in places. If this one is so active, we'd be loving it. You described everything so well. Obviously it's not too bad for you if you keep going back. Too bad we aren't anywhere near. That would be an experience.

  • @dirtbubble -

thanks...it's a fun place and I am thinking of swinging by tomorrow night or Sunday afternoon for some football

  • @AnamcharaConcepts -

That first time was so intense and it was one of those feelings that I have yet to replicate when visiting. I have often wondered if it was because the spirits didn't know us. I know my friend "Harriet" hasn't returned.

I didn't include all the stories the owner has told me especially of kitchen equipment turning on and moving.

  • Wow, that is amazing.  I believe in that stuff too, but it's kind of scary if the ghosts, spirits, whatever, aren't nice. =

  • @Peridot21 -

yeah urinating on myself, feeling like I am being choked, and asthma attacks aren't fun but there is something that draws me to this place.

  • wow! that's crazy
i've always wanted to join a paranormal group and, i'd love to join in on a xanga meet-up!

  • @shanon12 -

It is a fun place and I keep going back even though I have friends that have been scared off by some things that have happened. Oh the last time I was there they were having a party so a friend and I were sitting in the backroom where all the activity is. Well the music from the jukebox kept playing while the DJ was playing his music. The bartender came and shut the jukebox off with a switch. A few minutes later the music from the jukebox turned on. The bartender came to where we were and laughed about us pulling a prank on him to make him think it was the ghosts but when he went to the switch it was turned off. He turned it on and nothing happened then turned the switch off and it shut down. Well as we were leaving the music started and we saw no one near that switch.

  • Great story. I can see you've had a lot of experiences at that bar.

  • @Shining_Garnet -

People seem to think it's because people drink but there are so many things that happen to people there who aren't drinking.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - Well, it can happen to people who are drinking. But, there are lots of bars that are actually haunted. I went to the Farmers Hope Inn back in November for a private investigation and the main building is a bar and restaurant and has been for years. That place is very haunted and we experienced lots of stuff while we were there. None of my group was drinking. And a few years ago my paranormal group had investigated another bar that was very haunted. So it doesn't always have to do with drinking at all. Sometimes the places are just really haunted.

  • Gah. If only I lived near there! I'd def be into a "ghost hunt". I'd probably scream like a little girl if something major happened but it would be AWESOME!

  • @PandaCobain -

I need to convince the owner to let me come down and spend the night and write about my experiences.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Yeah ya do! I'd love to read about that! And you'd have to take pictures and EVPs and even video if you can borrow a video camera! That would be awesome.
