The Hidden Benefits of Smoking
I came across this list whilst looking through the groups to which former students belong. One student had joined a group on facebook called "I Enjoy the Hidden Benefits of Smoking". I joined and two minutes later he left. I used to smoke cigars and cigarettes. My cigarette habit at its highest was one pack every two weeks, that was a difficult summer. My cigar habit...during the school year it was two a day. I have been smoke free since July 3rd of 2007. Anyway here is an edited list. I originally posted this when Xanga was being overrun with ads from Truth. I found it odd that an anti-smoking campaign was funded by a tobacco company. Also this weekend I went away and I get back there are all these posts about smoking so I thought I had to fit in...peer pressure is a bitch. Oh and while in Illinois I saw some signs outside all restaurants saying that they banned smoking and people were not allowed to smoke within a 15 foot radius of the entrance, and I can imagine some of those hardcore anti-smoking people taking otu their tape measures to make sure they were outside the 15 feet. Anti-smoking...now that is Nazism since the Nazi regime was the first world government to institute smoking bans.
1. Being able to start conversation with strangers by asking "hey, can I get a light?
2. Being the envy of every homeless person and getting the satisfaction of telling them "sorry, I’m all out" when they ask to bum a smoke.
3. Having the ability to leave any boring or uncomfortable situation by saying "oh yea I’m just gonna step outside for a smoke".
4. Getting that little extra kick after smoking pot.
5. Blowing smoke in peoples faces when they give you that nasty "you're poisoning my air" look.
6. Having a few cigarettes in place of a meal when the food is just so god awful terrible.
7. Being united and bonded with other smokers because you all feel like prisoners of war huddled in a little smoking section or out in the cold, rainy weather.
8. Being able to stay awake all night through constant chain smoking.
9. Revealing hidden laser traps like those in Metal Gear Solid.
10. Feeling truly European while visiting Europe.
11. Being super classy because you're doing what EVERY single movie star, business mogul, famous musician, military hero, and great politician did from 1920-1950.
12. Supporting fine American corporations like Altria Group and RJ Reynolds, which donate millions of dollars to various charities, the Federal government, and schools.
13. Always having a lighter on hand, because then if you get lost in the wilderness, you can make a survival fire while the other non-smokers freeze to death rubbing sticks together.14. Burning perfectly round holes into paper, especially in photographs of people you plan to off.
15. Being able to enjoy many delicious combinations, such as alcohol and cigarettes, weed and cigarettes, blow and cigarettes, food and cigarettes, coffee & cigarettes, etc.
16. Having a much more practical means of masking the weed smell of a recently hot-boxed car, rather than using axe or Lysol.
17. Feeling fucking amazing when you have a cigarette right after sex.
18. Feeling older, more sophisticated, and more badass than your peers if you smoked cigarettes in junior-high.
19. Second hand smoke=second hand coolness; smoking=source of coolness.
20. Smoking gives you something to do on those long drives.
21. Smoking lets you join an exclusive, cooler, more mature club.
22. Can appreciate blues and jazz music all the more when smoking.
23. Helps you control appetite.
24. Don’t have to do as much work as non-smokers because you get smoke breaks.
25. Don’t have to wait at restaurants because the smoking section is never full.
26. When you smoke, you never have to worry about constipation.
27. When you smoke, there are less mosquitoes around you.(So true, I lived in Minnesota where the mosquito is the state bird.)
28. If you frown while smoking street gangs will fear you (unless they are smoking).
29. Smoking turns boys into men and men into legends.
30. Smoking gives you the ability to attract better looking, mature women.
31. Flicking cigarettes at people who annoy you is cooler than shouting at them.
32. Cigarette smoking has been medically proven to off-set the effects of Parkinson’s Disease, ease the effects of OCD, and chemically reduce stress.
33. Cigarette smoke dissolves cholesterol.
34. Cigarette smoke helps get rid of those pesky leaches that stick to your legs after swimming in one of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes.
35. Smoking makes you impervious to harsh climates. (I quit smoking and now I complain about the weather)
36. Our president smokes and how cool is he?
37. The Nazis instituted smoking bans. You wouldn't want to be like Hitler, would ya?

1,2,3,13,14,31 and 36 are why I want to start now : )
I am not anti or whatsoever, just that I am allergic/sensitive anything related to cigarette especially the cigarette itself.
Cigarettes and coffee: an alcoholic’s best friend.

I can totally see that girl from healthkicker coming here and using this as real back up to her list. lol

I like this even more.
Wow, I got trolled by reading this post.
last year my town voted in non-smoking inside buildings. i beleive you have to be 25 feet from doors of buildings but you can smoke anywhere else. and we non-smokers don't have to work harder because we get breaks too. we're just fatter because we're eating sugary treats instead of inhaling smoke.
didn't know smoking had anything to do with constipation though lol
hmmmmmmmmmmmm i may hafta startup agin btw i miss #1 the most imma natchurly shy guy & askin forra light/smoke wuz the only way i cud opinna conversayshun witha straynjur
i smoke.....its all natural......its 420 somewhere!
Nope, that's a writers best friend. An alcoholic's best friend is cigarettes and booze, I should know, I'm Irish.
I love my cigarettes. Both Washington and California have the 25 foot law of entrances, so where I live, and there's fucking store entrances every ten feet, it's impossible to smoke in downtown. But they haven't banned it in your own home yet, so. Yay!
lol, my new favorite picture of Obama

I would love to be able to flick cigarettes at people. I had a co-worker back in the days of working in a tourist trap that flicked those like a pro but I don't recall her flicking them at people...I would do that however.
@RestlessButterfly -
That's true, I don't like to be around smoke but people have that right in this country.
@nooitzben -
I often worry about people setting up trip lasers in my house while I sleep.
@maniacsicko -
Thanks
@bluedreamer85 -
It used to help me but maybe that is too much information. There was nothing quite like a fine cigar after a good meal.
@MangoWOW -
My findings are just as scientific as the original findings of the World Health Organization concerning the dangers of second-hand smoke.
@flowmorphiaslow -
It's been too long to remember that one for myself.
@Gerald_Washington -
Sorry about that. I try not to be a troll especially not with my writing.
@NightlyDreams -
Somehow the tobacco is a laxative and it aides with digestion.
I don't think the distance from the door gets enforced. In Madison I don't even know if there is a set distance but one time I went to a concert and there was a mass of people smoking right at the doorway. It was funny because they weren't just smoking cigarettes.
I worry that the smoking ban is going to lead to something like a donut ban.
@pansybradshaw -
Smoking can make you feel so vulnerable and yet so superior. If you don't have a smoke or a light than you are pretty much helpless but when you have them and someone else doesn't they come to you and you become their personal smoking Jesus.
@LUNAPHIA -
ah...I know what you are smoking. I havea few tobacco farms around me and they sell it without any of the additives the major companies put in to the processed cigarettes. There is nothing like smoking tobacco that way. I need to do that again so I can use my peace pipe.
@pocoemme -
Ah yes...coffee for writers and booze for Irish...I mean alcoholics. I was sort of freaked out when I read how Ireland had a country wide smoking ban in pubs and restaurants. That doesn't seem right to ban smoking in Ireland of all places.
@Shy___Away -
I remember Minnesota tried to ban it in homes especially if there were children in the home. I can understand that to an extent however it takes away from freedom and we become Nazis. I think there was also a bill attempting to ban smoking in cars.
@MrsMcKagan -
He does love his cigarettes. I wish I could find more photos of him smoking but it is something he does in private.
@storyslut -
hahahahahahahaha my best frend & i used to flik ar smokes with glee @annoyin pepul i wuz espeshuly gud @maykin the cig land just inchiz frum ther feet so the insult wuz taykin but i cudnt be charjd witha sault my frend lykd to aim for ther hair hahahahahahahahahaha
@godfatherofgreenbay -
i think you have reason to worry about another type ban. because since the tobacco tax i have now heard about them wanting to tax sodas and snack foods. eventually we'll be back no taxation without representation again... oh wait i'm still not represented...
LOL that's funny
@HiROBii -
Thank you!
@pansybradshaw - Oh man, I could really take that up as a sport!
Fun list. I realize with the first one that I was missing that benefit by not smoking - starting a conversatin out of the blue with a stranger. Somehow it just doesn't work to walk up to a pretty young thing and say "Hey, I like looking at your cleavage." May be could start a list of the hidden benefits of being a dirty old man. (smile)
@storyslut -
the whole hayre thayng cud be gud for yer bizzniz too dammij kontrol hahahahahahahaha of korse yud hafta werra mask but...
In Argentine we can't smoke in public places like cafes and bars (at least in the center of Buenos Aires) so I know what you are talking about when you said we at least have something in comun with all the gathered people outside.
Smoking helps you to practice your blowjobs.
@godfatherofgreenbay - It's blasphemy...
"22. Can appreciate blues and jazz music all the more when smoking."
SOOOO true, and it's the main reason I was so pissed when IL instituted the ban. I haven't been to Blue Chicago since... what's the point? It's not blues without that smoky atmosphere.
Here's another reason: Makes going to the bar more enjoyable/brings customers in if you own a bar. Most bar regulars smoke... if you can't smoke at the bar, then it just gives them more incentive to buy their liquor at the grocery store and stay home. There's a reason every non-smoking bar before the ban failed miserably.
@curiousdwk -
Give me a few more years to work on my "Hidden Benefits of Being a Dirty Old Man" list.
@mariko_grinder -
There was a song I once heard about the gathering of smokers outside of buildings. I think it was just called "Smoking Outside of the Building" and it mentioned how smokers should rise up and overtake the non-smokers but they wouldn't be able to because they would be out of breath.
@KimOngJr -
Well...I wouldn't know about that so I will have to take your word for it.
@ithiliya -
I can't imagine the blues or jazz scene without smoke. I have been toying with the idea of writing something based on the story of Leadbelly and I know I would have to include smoking but I am scared because there is this movement in Hollywood to give movies that feature smoking a mandatory R rating. I can't remember which movie I recently saw that featured smoking but didn't have an R rating but it just had numerous anti-smoking commercials beforehand and also warnings in the rating section as to why it had that rating.
I was just in IL this weekend and was amazed by the ban. Is it in hotels too? The desk clerk asked if I smoked and I said no. I wonder if I would have been charged extra. I also loved how there were signs everywhere warning people they couldn't smoke within 15 feet of the entrances. At least the sign making industry is making money off these smoking bans.
Speaking of which, when I was living in Minnesota one city adopted a smoking ban as a experiment to see if it would work statewide. That town lost many bars. Basically the ones that survived were the ones located near the campuses and the major chain bars. The mom and pop places lost business and eventually closed. So what do the leaders of Minnesota ask for? A STATEWIDE BAN! They saw how these businesses failed yet they wanted a statewide ban. Now I do have asthma and enjoy being able to not have to worry about using an inhaler in the bar but to me it takes away from a person's liberty and pursuit of happiness. Wisconsin is going smoke free in 2010. I am anxious to see how many bars will fold. And somehow I have yet to understand how this cigar shop and bar in Madison can have smoking.
This is about the third post I've come across about smoking. There are still places where you can smoke inside? Wow. I can't say I'm a fan of smoking, but I'm a fan of choice. Smoking messes with my asthma which is why I hate people smoking near doors!
@TiRocKiinPiinK -
I think sometime next year is when Wisconsin goes smoke free.
Wow! Why didn't I see this? I need to get back on those clove cigarettes ASAP!
@bitterbittenrockinblonde22 -
Oh man cloves...it has been so long since I had one of those. I don't know if I like the taste as much as I like the smell.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
It just seems like everywhere had already done it. For awhile in Pa, you could still smoke in a lot of places, but that changed real quick. Here in De though, at one of the hospitals, the ban is extreme. You can't even smoke in your car on their property especially if you work there.
And to think... I was considering quitting before reading all the benefits. LOL j/k. I don't think I'm close to making that decision yet, and this list has nothing to do with that. LOL <3 SuZ
@VioletMoonDancer7 -
Well I am not trying to coerce anyone to start or stop smoking with this list.
@pocoemme - Since you know better, then I must agreed with you. Mm... I am allergic too coffee as well.
Found your blog excessively interesting indeed. I really enjoyed studying it.
