  • Monday Morning Mash-up Madness

Before we begin the mash-up madness, here are some photos I promised.  Just a note, the leaves are from last fall.  This fall they weren't as vivid.  The cold weather followed by warm and then freezing really took it's toll and they never turned.  Most of the other pictures come from this summer.

OK so this is my side yard.  I put those windsocks up because I was having a squirrel and rabbit problem.  Apparently the motion will scare them away.  It was to no avail.  The rabbits burrowed into my yard but they were on the receiving end of my hose.

One of those trees is my neighbor's actually so I guess that doesn't count.

These are my delicious apples.  They don't look that delicious because we didn't have much rain this year so they never fully developed.

These are my Jonathon apples early in the season.  I demand your respect because I grow those organically.

Oh...Amish...notice how you can tell the Amish have been on the road...yes, it's fun seeing steaming piles of horse shit outside my house because they don't like to take their buggies through the main street in town.

They also hog the damn road.

This is a fun German restaurant located across the highway from an Air Force base.

This is my favorite.  It's a roadside produce stand.  Notice there is some produce sitting on the table but there isn't a worker.  Well it's operated on the honor system.  The people that run the stand are part of the German Baptist religion.  They are sort of like Amish but they believe in electricity and cars.  I like to call them the electric Amish.  Anyway they have the suggested price for the food and then you drop the money in the grey post next to that flower pot.  Stands like that are all over the place around here.  I am amazed by the honesty.

    The Mash-Up Madness

This one has elements of three songs or at least I think I am picking up three songs.  "White Wedding" by Billy Idol, "Other Side" by Red Hot Chili Peppers, and "Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas.  I am mixed on this one.

I think this could be the WTF mash-up of the week.  "Country Grammar" by Nelly mixed with "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Maybe I am over thinking that because "Sweet Home Alabama" has been sampled by so many bands, I'm pointing at you Kid Rock.

Remember when I said Eminem is commonlly mashed?  Well here is his song "Without Me" mashed up with Shakira's "Wherever". I can sort of get into this one.

Well that is all for this week.  I hope you enjoy.

  • I wonder if the honor system works because it eliminates the thrill of being caught from the stealing equation.

  • Nice apples!

We have a huge apple tree in the back yard of my house. I have no idea what kind of apples they are. But they too are organic. And they made excellent apple sauce. Probably would have made great cider if we'd been paying enough attention to make some. They also made great deer fodder.

Oh, and, WA has prettier leaves. :P Much more colorful. And unless you post a greater variety of photos demonstrating a higher capacity for color (something that would expand beyond the 256 color limit of a gif file), I will continue to believe this to be the case. "Pics or it didn't happen" as the internet says. lol

  • Changing colours of leaves are awesome.

  • Have you ever been to the Amanas Colony in Iowa?

  • Beautiful pictures! Haha, I've never heard of a squirrel problem! Did they steal your breakfast? ;)

These honor systems are amazing. I was once in a kind of hotel and there was everything like that, even a bar without a barkeeper and access for everyone. I asked the owner if it worked, he said it worked perfectly.

  • electric amish lol that's neat about the produce stand though

  • You should scoop up those 'Amish leavings' and add them to your garden soil. Road apples make great fertilizer.

  • Electric Amish. I'm going to remember that one. We have all sorts of those stands here too selling corn mostly. There are cant elope's, all kinds of stuff. I saw one box where you put the money in that had at least $400.00 in it.  My chain saw wasn't working so they never lost a dime that weekend.   We had the same thing happen with most of the maple trees here. They barely got a chance to change and most of them now look like they've been raped or through a nuclear storm. That little "Bavarian Inn" looks a lot like the Blue Moon where they have all kinds of superb German fare. Mmmmm,  schnitzel. Mmmmm, pig tails and kraut. The next major city about 25 miles away is called Kitchener where they hold the big Oktoberfest. I'm pretty sure the population is 99.2% German.

How are you feeling? Hope you are rid of the mange, I mean flu.  Talk to you later.

  • ....."It's fun seeing steaming piles of horse shit outside my house because they don't like to take their buggies through the main street in town." LMAO!!!!!! Tell them to get a "Pooper Scooper" Clean it up! You got my respect with those Organic Apples way COOL!!!!
And Hey I live in the Bronx,NY! That grey post that you drop the money wouldn't last 3 minutes on the street in New York....matter of fact the whole stand will be stolen!!!! LOL...

  • Eminem and Shakira ...that was HOT!!!!!

  • Oooo prettyyyy pics... i really like the apple trees... so you do eat them? yum! :)

re the Amish buggy thing:  i was in Ohio last year visiting relatives and there's an Amish community nearby... they actually had road signs that said "buggy crossing" or something like that... i thought that was, what's the word, interesting i guess ;)

  • I'm amazed as well by the produce stand concept. Where I live in inner city Minneapolis, the food would be gone in under a half hour and not a penny would have been dropped in the can.

  • Haha, electric Amish..nice. I live down South where fall colors are pretty much non-existent, so I greatly appreciate the vivid fall colors. Just took a trip to DC/NY--gorgeous autumn, I did not want to leave!!

German restaurant..my blood calls to me. Now I want some beer/bratwurst and the like, thank you very much! And right by an Air Force base? Men in uniform, hello! ;)

  • I could be wrong on this but it reminds me of Northern Ohio, do you live in Ohio? My next guess would probably be PA.
I think it would be interesting to live as the Amish for a year or so just to see what lessons I'd learn from it.

  • electric amish, you crack me up sometimes
fun German, hmmm going to have to ponder that one for awhile

  • Ah, love the pictures of the leaves..so beautiful and thanks for the Birthday greet! =]

  • Wow, the pictures of the leaves are very nice... And, LOL @ the horse shit on the road... And, weird, that mash-up of "Country Grammar" and "Sweet Home Alabama" is weird... Odd coupling.

  • I love your apples, Godfather! Almost as much as I love your Cock. And I respect them all!

Beautiful pics!!!!! I enjoyed seeing Fall in your neck of the woods. Thanks for sharing this!

I liked the last mash-up best!

    HUGS!

  • @TheGiantSlayer -

I think also people have an innate sense that they are being watched. There is even a honor system golf driving range in town.

  • @entendezmavoix -

Thankfully I have no deer eating them, just the squirrels and birds. My house used to be my grandfather's and it is actually two lots. The second lot was his "orchard". I think he had about 6 or 7 apple trees, a cherry tree, a raspberry patch, a huge garden, a grape vine, a rhubarb patch, a plum tree, and a pear tree. Anyway the different apple trees he did experimenting with grafting to make hybrid apples. I remember one year he made some apples that were red, orange, and yellow and the mixture looked like tie-dye. I wish I could do that.

I have heard that Washington had beautiful foliage because one of my fellow teachers was originally from Washington.

  • @PeaceSearcher -

Yes, I love it except when they change colors it sends dry particles in the air so it affects my asthma.

  • @Paul_Partisan -

I have never been to those colonies but I have read about them. I need to get down there. One of my diversity classes in college brought them up. Our professor made us take a weekend trip to either those colonies, inner city Minneapolis, inner city Milwaukee or a town called Postville, Iowa. That town was amazing. Up until 1987 the only diversity the town saw was German Catholics and German Lutherans. Then a meat packing plant closed and a group of Hasidic Jews bought the plant and they hired Hispanic workers and then more jobs opened and Russians, Ukrainians, and Filipinos have entered the town.

  • @nattata -

I suppose they do steal my breakfast because I like eating applesauce at that meal. It was funny one morning leaving my house, I watch a squirrel run up the tree and pick an apple, and then run down the tree with the apple in it's mouth. He came running toward me and then made eye contact and dropped the apple and ran.

Wow...a bar on the honor system. You will have to give me the address because I think after I visit then they would change that policy.

  • @BranmacFeabhail -

Yeah...it's also the name of a band that is supposedly Amish and never heard rock and roll but all their songs seem to be classic rock songs but the lyrics are changed to things about Amish life.

Those stands like that are all over. In fact tonight I took my cats to the vet for a check up and I passed one selling honey. They had about a dozen jars of honey sitting on a bench and there was a sign that said $3 and a glass jar underneath the sign. I almost took one but I don't eat much honey.

  • @MelFamy -

I want to do waht my great-grandmother did to some neighbors who let their dog use her yard as it's bathroom. She picked up the dogs leavings and then took them over to the neighbors and smeared them on a pair of sunglasses. She was a no nonsense strong German lady. The only problem I have with this is that the Amish don't wear sunglasses because that would glorify the body. Oh and in case you were wondering, this great grandmother was the mother of my grandfather that I have wrote about.

  • @dikdoktor -

The only good thing about the crazy weather we are having now is that it has finally brought us out of drought.

I saw one of those stands that was selling honey tonight. They wanted $3 for a jar and left an empty glass jar out where you would put the money. That just amazes me. Also we have a golf driving range that is based on the honor system.

  • @dikdoktor -

Oh and that German restaurant is huge. They get so many soldiers on passes come in for food. I usually go on Sundays when they have the all you can eat German brunch. Oh and Friday nights they have the traditional Wisconsin fish fry...all you can eat beer battered cod. I am not much of a seafood fan but I love those fish frys.

And in case you are wondering, here's the website.

  • @rickystar1 -

Yeah they wouldn't listen to me yelling unless I yelled at them in German. I think the state government tried to pass laws to get them to clean it up but people said it infringed upon their right to practice religion. Another thing that I have mentioned before that I dislike is that the nails from their horse shoes get picked up in car tires way too easily.

  • @Peridot21 -

I do not eat them straight off the tree like for fruit...weird? I usually make applesauce, candied apple rings, apple chips, pies, or brown betties. Yes, from time to time I enjoy baking. I think I made about 10 quarts of cinnamon applesauce and 4 quarts of regular. I also made about 3 or 4 pounds of dehydrated apple chips. I kept saying that I was going to make hard cider but the time in the process would have been so long for my patience.

As for the signs, there are hitching posts around town and a couple of stores have signs that say "Horses Not Permitted" or "No Horses Allowed Beyond this Point". We also have many signs with the horse and buggy. I think there are about 5 Amish communities surrounding me.

  • @UR_MUSE -

When I first moved back here after living up there and saw the stands and people leaving their cars run while they went into the gas station to get food, I was in shock.

  • @Shopgirl0393 -

MMM now I am thinking beer and bratwurst. I have had people give me rave reviews about my bratwurst. I usually soak them at least 24 hours in beer and an assortment of spices. Then I boil them in the beer along with a stick of butter and an onion. Then they get grilled but what is extremely important is that after they are cooked, you put them back in the beer so that way they soak up the beer they may have lost on the grill.

Men in uniform huh? You would like that area then. There is the Air Force base and then about 15-20 minutes up the highway is an Army base so there are many military guys running around.

  • @afuncynicalbash -

No, I am in Wisconsin. The Amish here are the hardliners, the ultra-conservative. They dislike the Amish from Pennsylvania and Ohio because they think they are too modernized.

I have often thought of living like the Amish but then I think of the bathroom and I don't know if I could do an outhouse or bathe only a couple times a week. Also I have grown used to wearing deodorant so I don't think I could be Amish.

  • @ElevenStones -

Well sometimes is the key words there. After I started using that term a friend told me there was a band called The Electric Amish. They aren't really Amish but they pretend to be. They play classic rock songs that they claim to have never heard and they change the lyrics to things about Amish life.

Fun German...you know, just follow the rules and everything will be fun. Oh and throw in a few polkas and beers.

  • @gabber_addict -

Thank you...hope your birthday was enjoyable.

  • @mZdejavuZ -

I think the weirdest part of that Nelly and Skynyrd song is how well it goes together.

Oh and that road that I was on...it has a hill and at the bottom of the hill it usually has mountains of horse apples because the Amish will sit their with the horses until they lighten their load so they can make it up the hill.

  • @carolinaatnight -

I wish I had more leaf photos but it takes very little to irritate my asthma and unfortunately when leaves change it is at it's worst. I have some other pics of farms that I could share but none of changing leaves. I had great plans to get out but the weather didn't cooperate.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - lol They had also expensive stuff there, like 4 or 5 € whiskey. So I was surprised that it worked but I guess it's because there are usually several guests which means to them something like a little control within this group.

  • @RestlessButterfly -

Thank you...the fun part was that I get to look at most of that every day during the fall.

  • Thanks for the pics and sharing.  I used to live near Phildelphia and so would see a lot of Amish if I went traveling West of there very far.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - well that's very impressive, godfather... all that baking stuff you do... i have yet to perfect (or care much about lol) that sort of thing... man, i really needed to be born into royalty ;P

  • @curiousdwk -

Thanks...I think these Amish are somewhat of a break away from the ones out there because those Amish are too liberal.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

LOL oh wow. You know what's funny. Recently I drove across a state that had this tourist-y Amish farm people could visit with quilt farms and everything... I can't remember if it was Wisconsin, but it may have been... Oh, and while we were dining at a local stop, I saw a van full of Amish people coming out ... o_O...

  • @mZdejavuZ -

Yeah that sounds like it could be here. It seems like there are Amish goods shops all over the place but it is good money for tourism. The funny thing about the Amish is that they refuse to own the cars but they will never refuse a ride and in fact they hire people to drive them places.

So you went through Wisconsin? More than likely if you did the interstate system you probably went through my towns.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - whoa, that sounds awesome! how difficult is grafting to do? Because if it's even close to reasonable, then you should try it. And if you can get it to work, you should try it with flowers next. Get some red and white roses going. You could give some woman you fancy a basket of tie-dye apples with a single red and white rose on top. It would be fantastic.

  • @entendezmavoix -

I remember it was an extensive process especially when he tried to get many apples to come out that way. He would cut out part of a branch from one tree and then cut a branch on the other tree and sort of swap but for those he did a three tree swap. And then I remember having to tie the grafted section into the branch with nylon.

Hmmm you have this thought out, don't you? Tie-dyed apples and red and white roses.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Ah weird, that would explain why I saw the Amish coming out of a van... I thought that was a strange sight... but yeah, now I'm pretty sure I did go through Wisconsin... And I also stopped by Minneapolis/St. Paul! I remember you told me you were from there and that there was a really good music scene there... Of course I checked out the Mall of America =P

  • @mZdejavuZ -

One of my neighbors hires himself out to the Amish to drive them to the city. He charges an hourly rate as well as gas. It's amazing how much he can make but of course they don't always need to go to the city.

Oh yeah...Minneapolis/St. Paul is a pretty swinging place. I have to be honest, I don't think I ever bought anything from a store at the Mall of America. I did go to the bars, theaters, and camp snoopy but that's about it. I always thought it was higher priced then anywhere else.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Oh that means they can make a relatively good rate from being a chauffeur...

Oh you never did buy anything there?... Yeah I stopped by there to check out the place, but didn't buy anything either. There's a huge mall where I was born -- West Edmonton Mall in Canada (largest mall in North America) -- and most of their stuff is also higher-priced than anywhere else too...

  • @mZdejavuZ -

I guess I never bought anything there because I knew places in the Cities where it was cheaper, especially music. I think the Mall of America is just more of a venue like for shows and things. Like they usually always have something going on there. The Food Network has so many contests staged there.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - That totally sounds reasonable. And the (potential) results would make it totally worth the effort. But I love unique things, so, I'm perhaps a bit biased. And, yes, I do "have this thought out." As I said, I like unique things. I'm fascinated by the unexplainable and the perplexing and the intriguing. I like puzzles and the people that create and question them. Anything that stands out from the crowd. And someone who has grafted apples and roses and assembles them in a basket and presents them as you would ambrosia to a god? Well, that just makes me and my nerdy self get all sorts of excited.

  • @entendezmavoix -

Well that is cool. It sort of reminds me of how a friend and I discussed how we were in search of the perfect woman for our wives. I wanted a girl who shared my birthday so that I would have an easier time remembering to get her something and then we would have to get married on that date. My friend however was searching for a girl whose birthday was February 14th and then would agree to marrying him on February 14th so he could knock out anniversary, birthday, and Valentine's in one swoop. He never found that girl and he ended up getting married in July. I on the other hand found a girl that shared my birthday but we live to far apart to make it work.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Ah yes, that would explain why they had a show there when I came to visit. LOL something about McDonald's. Anyway, yeah, that would make sense that other places in the Cities would have cheaper prices. ... Hmm, Food Network, one of the best cable networks EVAR! :)

  • @mZdejavuZ -

I remember being in the Mall of America when they did Viva La Bam. I actually ended up in the same bar as some of the cast but they were being surrounded by dozens of screaming teenagers so I left well enough alone. I was also there for one of those Food Network challenge shows. It had something to do with sugar structures.

One of the best places in Minneapolis for music is a store called The Electric Fetus. Strange name but it has such an incredible selection of every genre of music plus they have shows there from time to time. I saw They Might Be Giants there.

Oh the Food Network...I don't mind that channel but I have issues with it especially in that show The Next Food Network Star. Two of those judges are the most vile and vain people on the face of the planet. I also had problems with it when I would visit my parents and that would be all they watched and then they would ask me what I wanted for meals. I would say that they have spent the better part of the day watching Food Network so they should make something that they saw. My mom would tell me that was stupid because it's just a TV show.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - I'm going to hope that your interest in her extended beyond her date of birth! Besides, wouldn't it be worth your while to find someone who wouldn't stress about you forgetting things like birthdays and anniversaries? Because, frankly, even if I know when something like that is occurring, I will often forget what day it is today. So, I may know that my mom's birthday is on October 13, but, if I don't know that today is October 13, it doesn't do me much good.

Basically, I'm looking for someone who doesn't stress about always remembering those dates because then he'll be more accepting of me if I don't remember them. Or, more specifically, more accepting of me.

What else qualified someone as the "perfect woman"? Anything other than her date of birth?

  • @entendezmavoix -

No I wasn't just interested in her for her date of birth. We had so much in common that it was a little bit freaky.

There is just so much that I look for which is probably why I am single. I know I would like a girl who is aware of different music and I only want that because one girl I dated only owned Weird Al cds. I would also like someone who isn't into the traditional "chick flicks" because I learned the hard way with that. A different girl I dated would continuously watch The Nightmare Before Christmas over and over. Strangely it wasn't the only movie she owned but the only movie she watched or wanted to watch.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

Ah, Electric Fetus, I'll have to check out that place if I ever go back to Minneapolis in the future. That sounds like a cool place to check out new music.

LOL! Did your mom ever make a dish she learned on the Food Network, besides the Next Food Network Star? I swear, whenever I watch Food Network, even after I've eaten a full meal, I still manage to feel hungry again and crave what I see! AND makes me wish I was a gourmet chef or something. I used to hate cooking, mostly because it was a forced upon me as a chore, but now, I really really enjoy it. :) It's so much fun, because you can be really creative and alter ingredients from existing recipes to make it even better! :)

  • @mZdejavuZ -

My mom has from time to time made something she saw but it is a rare occurrence. I think of all the things she has seen made the amount she has made is about .5%. Yeah I like cooking but I am best on a grill but it's too bad that I can't use it year round.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - I think that having expectations for your partner is only a problem if you aren't open to compromise and communication. But I know what you mean about meeting someone who has so much in common with you. I met this guy last summer and we instantly hit it off. We still talk pretty often. It was just strange how we could fit so perfect together but both know that we were totally wrong for each other.

You're looking for someone who has an open mind and likes to try new things. I can definitely relate to that. I get so tired of people who have no creativity or who are content to do the same things endlessly.

  • @entendezmavoix -

The other things I would look for is open mindedness and willing to experience new things like you mentioned. OK I think one of my girlfriends broke up with me because I said that I enjoyed a certain type of sex and she couldn't handle that. Her quote "You want me to put your pee thing in my mouth? And you want to go near my pee thing with your mouth?"

One night I was pissed at my dad for prying into my personal life. He asked me what I was looking for in a girl and to get him to back off I said "Two tits and a cunt." He hasn't bothered asking me anything about my personal life since.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - HAHAHAH, oh dear...i'm more than a little entertained by this girl that didn't comprehend the brilliance of oral sex.

having as much grace as i do, i probably would have responded with something like "my penis" or "two tits and a cock". but, then again, it's probably best to be more dignified. i'm in a bit of a crass mood. it happens.

  • @entendezmavoix -

Well she was a virgin and intended on losing it on her wedding night and maybe not even then but later on in the marriage like maybe on the first anniversary. I think celibacy would have been easier than that. She was a girl who when she kissed me, she felt my rager and then spent the next hour calling herself a slut. Ah...I love sexual repression.

Yeah I actually held myself from saying "my dick".
