My Favorite Comedians
This week I saw that Mancouch had a post titled My Five Favorite Comedians. I was hopeful that maybe, just maybe that website could make a decent post. I shouldn't have got my hopes up. One of the "comedians" was merely a character on a TV show and then two others they based on their movie work. To me a comedian is someone who does stand-up and NOT merely a character in a movie. A comedian is someone who performs live. Anyway, since I posted about my least favorite comedians(most of which probably fuel masturbatory fantasies over there at mancouch) and since Newsweek just posted about the 12 comedians who aren't funny, I thought I would finally get around listing some of my favorites. There is no order here.
Rodney Dangerfield
What can be said about Rodney? Nothing really...even in death he gets no respect. I guess I love his humor so much that it has rubbed off on me in a wrong way. He comedy was very self-depricating and it spanned topics from his birth to school to married life. His material may not have been believable, but you laughed at it. Rodney didn't like wearing clothes and he sometimes would perform in nothing but a bathrobe. My dad said that he saw Rodney perform in L.A. once upon a time and said, "He has the biggest balls in show biz." I hope he meant that by performing in a bathrobe he was going against the establishment. Rodney also gave so many popular comedians their break by letting them appear in his clubs some of those comedians are: Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Roseanne Barr, Jeff Foxworthy(I may not like him but he is relatively popular), Tim Allen, Sam Kinison, Rita Rudner, Andrew Dice Clay, and Bob Saget. One of my favorite Dangerfield quotes: "One year they asked me to be poster boy - for birth control." And how many people on that mancouch list could pull off a Triple Lindy?Bill Scheft
I wonder how many of you have heard of this guy. I guarantee most of you have heard a Bill Scheft joke at one point in your life or at least between the years 1991 until present. He is the head writer for the David Letterman show. He has also written humor articles for Sports Illustrated. He's written numerous books, a couple of which are in treatment for films. I tried to stay away from the late night talk show hosts because most of their jokes are written by someone else and Letterman's someone else is Bill Scheft.Sunda Croonquist
Sunda is a comedian who will have you arrested if you don't laugh at her jokes. Originally she was a police detective and when not keeping the streets safe she took acting classes. Jackie Mason told her to persue stand-up. Sunda has an African American mother and a Swedish father so the jokes come naturally for her. Here's part of her act: "And there is a lot to laugh at because when you’re a Swedish and Black Jew, growing up looking like a Puerto Rican and your mother gives you a Hindu name and sends you to an Irish Catholic School….you’re bound to be funny. But of course the funny doesn’t stop there…..being married to an attorney with an overbearing Jewish mother in law and two precocious daughters under six makes this comedian different from all others. She’s the ultimate “Diverse Diversion” ….she relates to being African-American. She relates to being a Jewish Princess….she has all these experiences that come together to make her the story of America." Now that Jewish mother-in-law, she led to problems for Sunda. Her mother-in-law filed a lawsuit against her in a U.S. District Court because she claims that Sunda is defaming her and her family and that her act is racist against Jews. Sunda had no clue about the lawsuit until she was at an audition and they asked her to explain the lawsuit. Sometimes the truth is the best material that comedians can work with.Patton Oswalt
Patton Oswalt started off writing for Mad TV. I enjoyed that show, I'll admit it. He's been in almost every medium. He voiced a character in Disney's "Ratatouille", he played Spence on "King of Queens", he lent his voice for a character in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas", he's had great selling comedy albums, he's been in music videos, and he has a starrign role in "Big Fan". And I can never forget his role in Reno 911: Miami. Shit...I am doing the mancouch thing. Patton's material is hilarious and covers politics and video games, basically a wide variety of nerdom. Along with Brian Posehn, Zach Galifinakis, and Maria Bamford, they toured with the mocking title "The Comedians of Comedy". My favorite quote: "90% of every art form is garbage - dance and stand-up, painting and music. Focus on the 10% that's good, suck it up, and drive on. "Woody Allen
Say what you will about his personal life, but damn it, Woody is funny. He is so witty. He wrote for The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show, and Candid Camera. Sometimes the movies he wrote felt like a stand-up routine. My favorite Woody Allen movies both are "documentaries" and both have the feel of a stand up routine: Take the Money and Run and Sweet and Lowdown. Some of my favorite quotes: "Bisexuality immediately doubles your chances for a date on Saturday night.", "Comedy just pokes at problems, rarely confronts them squarely. Drama is like a plate of meat and potatoes, comedy is rather the dessert, a bit like meringue.", "I am not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens.", and "I want to tell you a terrific story about oral contraception. I asked this girl to sleep with me and she said 'No.''Dave Attell
People say that Dave and I have a lot in common. We're bald or balding, drunks, and often get mistaken for being Jewish. Dave often did stand-up with John Stewart and then he got his break by appearing on the David Letterman show. Then he wrote for Saturday Night Live, the the god years with Chris Farley. He also dated the hottest comedian, Sarah Silverman but they broke-up and she went on to bang other comedians. I think Attell is best known for his show on Comedy Central called Insomniac. He went around a city exploring things that happen after hours. He is just off the wall in his performances. I remember one where he talked about what to do if you are ever caught masturbating. You yell at the person who catches you to "GO GET HELP!" My favorite quote besides the one I mentioned: "Sex is not important. What's important is that afterward part. When you're both naked and it's warm and you're watching the sun come up in the windshield. You look in her eyes, you look in her one good eye and help her strap on her leg and you know: you just fucked a pirate."David Cross
David Cross, this guy is hilarious. He grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta where he claims to have experienced much racism because of his Jewish heritage. It makes for great bits in his routine. He went to college in Boston where he began working in improv and stand-up. He recalls that the stand-up scene in Boston was too homophobic and racist and dumb. Guess where Dane Cook got his start? Cross wrote for The Ben Stiller Show and then was a star and writer for Mr. Show. Mr. Show gave him his break and he has been everywhere. He has written books and released comedy album. His albums "It's Not Funny" and "Shut Up You Fucking Baby" may be some of my favorite comedy albums. His most recent book contained an author biography that said "David Cross is currently fucking Amber Tamblyn". He also had the audacity to hope(see what I do here) that he could get away with doing a line of cocaine at a White House dinner. He did the line 40ft from the president and was not caught. Oh and if you want to see David Cross at his funniest, do yourself a favor and look for the movie "Run Ronnie Run". Also check him out in the tv series "Arrested Development". It's no longer on FOX but I am catching it on IFC. He played a pyschiatrist who was a licensed analyst and therapist making him a licensed analrapist.Jerry Seinfeld
Do I really need to write anything here? No.Phyllis Diller
Phyllis Diller is one of the pioneers of female stand-up comics. I think without her, many women we consider funny wouldn't be known to us. Too bad all her work gave us Kathy Griffin. She got her start while working as a secretary at a TV station. The host of a show thought she was funny and persuaded her to try out her routine. She made an appearance on the show and then was booked by a comedy club and the rest is history. She is still funny today at the age of 92.Honorable mention: Mitch Hedberg and Nick Swardson mostly because they are from Minnesota but Hedberg really brought back people to stand-up. Stephen Wright, Roseanne Barr, Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garafalo, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, Dave Chappelle, Don Rickles, Wendy Liebman and oh the list could go on but I figure I already put you to sleep.
My favorite comedian on Xanga? That would have to be jestiny1. Look at that person's comment on my Least Favorite Comedians list and know that whoever it was started a Xanga account just to write that. Talk about dedication to the art of comedy.
Who is your favorite comedian?
Comments (70)
Bill Cosby will always be my absolute favorite. Red Skelton was also ridiculously funny. Of course, add in George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield, Mitch Hedburg...
Big ups here for having David Cross on the list!
love Hedberg and Seinfeld. CANT STAND Sarah Silverman. She may as well be Dane Cook to me. Dont think I've ever seen a more un-funny person.(or jeff dunham to a lesser degree; especially since college where everyone seemed to listen to at least one comedian). ....but I'm not a big comedy listener
Jack Handey
He's done writing for SNL, The New Yorker, his own books... etc. You probably already know about him but if you haven't, look up his stuff, you will not be disappointed.
Oh, I guess we're talking about comedians we can't stand here as well.... mine is Margaret(sp?) Cho. She's so .... wrong, in every aspect (for starters - her looks?). Ugh.
I know all of yours except one. And I like these you've named. I like some of the old SNL people...like Dana Carvey. When I was a little girl Jerry Lewis made me laugh. I like Seinfeld a lot.
My fav would have to be Wanda Sykes or Steve Martin.
I met a Rodney Dangerfield wanna' be last he. He was kinda' funny. Mostly I think because he was drunk. And I was giggly. So he found an audience in me.
Good post!
hmm...I have to think about that...I'm bad at saying what my favorite anything is.
but I will say this, I can't stand sarah silverman.
I don't think she's funny.
Prior and Carlin
Am I the only one who finds David Cross to just be obnoxious and not funny, kind of like Andy Dick?
Do you have Michael McIntyre in the US? Look him up, he is totally hilarious. Hes No.1 over here and he is relatively clean...I am not massive fun of comics that only get laughs by talking about sex or masterbating etc. Hes really good xxx
Nice list!
I haven't heard of her before this list, but Sunda Croonquist is absolutely gorgeous, wow. I'll have to listen to her stuff. Patton Oswalt! Jerry Seinfeld! Nick Swardson!
I must not know a lot of comedians, because my favorite is probably Dave Chappelle. If you haven't already, you need to see/listen to his "Killing Them Softly" stand-up. One of the best I've ever seen so far (which isn't saying a lot, because I haven't seen a lot... but still! Def worthy!)
Interesting post. I prefer comediens who don't resort to gags, who don't laugh at others, and use intellectual or word jokes.
seinfeld. russell peters.
Jeff Dunham and Achmed the Dead Terrorist.
Oh my god, did you just mention David Cross without mentioning Arrested Development??
my favorite comedian? that's a hard question... there are so many good ones... i'll give you a "fav list" instead, ok?
...in no particular order: Stephen Wright (i miss that guy, he just cracks me up), Kat Williams (yeah, i know, it's proabably not pc to like him, but i do... "your baby is supposed to like skittles!" lol), Steve Martin (i saw him live in Chicago, i'll never forget it, it was awesome), Jerry Seinfeld (not all of his stuff, but some of it is great), and i generally don't like female comedians (i generally am just embarrassed for them... ) but i do like ol' Phyllis and Roseanne... Bill Cosby... Rodney... i'm sure i'm forgetting somebody lol...
Louis ck, and then Russell Peters. lmfao.
@Garistotle -
I was thankful that I got to see Carlin before he died.
@BranmacFeabhail -
Sarah Silverman's act is strange, I admit I'd rather look at her than listen to her. Ugh...Jeff Dunham...it seems like everywhere I go people quote him or his puppets just like a few years ago it was Larry the Cable Guy. Thankfully ventriloquism is only popular once every 30 years.
@its_me_katie -
Oh yeah, Jack Handy. I remember being in 8th grade and we would sit there and quote the deep thoughts at lunch with our teacher.
I remember you talking about Margaret Cho before. I remember her from her early stand-up days when she had the sitcom. I liked her show but something happened.
@carolinaatnight -
Oh yes, Dana Carvey. I have some bootlegs of his performances, it's just too bad that they are CDs and a lot of his act was visual comedy. I wish Steve Martin would go back to his funny side instead of what he has been doing lately.
@TheSecretLifeOfPandas -
Yes, Sarah Silverman...I'd rather look at her than listen to her but what do I know.
@Paul_Partisan -
I have always been apprehensive in including Pryor because his material was written by someone else. His delivery was great though.
@pleasurepuss74 -
Hmmm I will have to look him up. He sounds good.
@mZdejavuZ -
I think I had to include Sunda mostly because of that lawsuit but because of that she made the news and I listened to her material. Funny stuff.
Oh yeah, I have the Dave Chappelle stuff. A while back I had Kazaa and found all these comedy acts in mp3 form. Someone recorded the stand-up shows on Comedy Central and posted those. I have stacks and stacks of cds of comedians.
@curiousdwk -
Hmmm I am trying to think of those. Some of the people here could be in that category. I always enjoyed Tom Lehrer even though he may not be classified as a comedian.
@royal_diadem -
Oh yeah, I have just become familiar with Russell Peters. He's got some good material.
@dreadpirate -
I have to say that some of Dunham's material is good especially with the Walter puppet.
@NoGraySunflowers -
Well I don't think Cross did much writing on that show if any. Yes, he was funny. I'll edit it for you.
@godfatherofgreenbay - It's the comedic nuance that made Tobias funny and you know it
@Peridot21 -
I'll have to be honest and admit that I enjoyed Katt Williams' take on Michael Jackson. I think I even posted that the day Jackson died. Oh and a strange thing about Stephen Wright, I always thought he was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I always thought he was the creepy biology teacher who asked to have a heart because he switched to Sanka. He's still alive although he doesn't make many appearances. IF you ever watch Craig Ferguson, there's a vote going on at his website for the favorite puppet used in comedy. Wright has a few votes.
@Shy___Away -
Yes, Louis CK. I think in my post about least favorite comedians I made the joke that if people claimed to love Dane Cook then they had to love Louis CK since Cook stole most of CK's material.
@NoGraySunflowers -
Yes, his license for being an analrapist was great.
@godfatherofgreenbay - LOL! "It isn't the spelling that bothers me...."
Lewis Black
I like Mitch Hedburg a lot as far as stand-up comedians go. There were some good up and comers when I visited second city in Toronto.
@Manstration -
Ah yes, I always liked what he had to say about my home state.
@dlmcniel -
Mitch Hedberg was huge. For a while there I can't remember any comedy albums being hot other than Seinfeld and Jeff Foxworthy. There was just something about his style. He was a lot like Stephen Wright although he was less depressing.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
really? her face screams "Oooh punch me!" to me. maybe it's because i am straight.
@BranmacFeabhail -
That could be it. I know I often scoff when women talk about good looking men because I just don't see it.
@godfatherofgreenbay - ack! i spelled Katt's name wrong! ...anywayyyy, i haven't seen his Michael Jackson thing, gonna have to check it out
oh and i forgot to mention about Andrew Dice Clay's Little Miss Muffet bit... "along came a spider, sat down beside her..." lol (i know you know it) ...i just love that for some reason ;D
ellen degeneres and robin williams
Jim Gaffigan is my favorite. Brian Regan is a close second.
I told a Mitch Hedberg joke just a couple of days ago, hah!
It was the one that went like this:
So this guy comes up to me and, just out of the goodness of his heart I guess, he asks if I want a frozen banana.
I tell him, "No... but I want a regular later, so...
yyyeeeaaaahhhhhhh."
My favorite Comedian is George Lopez.
@TheGiantSlayer -
Oh yes, Jim Gaffigan. He is in this great movie set in WI about these guys who follow the high school hockey playoffs. He is such a great actor.
@NightlyDreams -
There are times when I have questioned if Robin Williams just didn't do a whole bunch of cocaine before he took the stage. Some of his mid 80s acts were so intense and he was all over the place. I also remember how he got in huge trouble during an appearance on Saturday Night Live. He did a routine about how they should make condoms based on the race of the wearer. It was so funny but too funny for TV.
@CleteusMaximus -
I remember the first time I saw Hedberg. I just sat there in disbelief because basically all he did was say one liners for 40 minutes. It was great. And because the holiday season is upon us, here's a good one: "A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer."
@ChainGangSoldier619 -
Yes, he is quite good. I have enjoyed his new talkshow.
My favorite comedian is me!
Methinks Mancouch should change its name to Mancough... uhuk... uhuk... uhuk!
@RestlessButterfly -
Yes...that is a good joke so you maybe you are a great comedian.
@godfatherofgreenbay - I like it when you being ironic...
Recently, Eddie Izzard is my favorite clown (shhh, I like him better than my boyfriend who is also a funny man).
@godfatherofgreenbay - Yes. I love Tom Lehrer. And the Capital Steps.
Robin Williams, Steven Wright, Dennis Miller, Eddie Murphy (specifically RAW), Sam Kinison just to name a few.
I will say that, although I hate his movies, Will Ferrel did a one man comedy show called ''You're Welcome America" that I watched on HBO Wednesday night and it was hilarious.
As for those I can't stand, the list is long and glorious...
And someone mentioned Andrew Dice Clay's Mother Goose, the only funny thing he ever did.
'Little Boy Blew...He needed the money"
Oh wow, definitely will check some of the comedian you've mentioned!
So far I've got Dylan Moran. That guy cracks me up every time! Also, Robin Williams.
@RestlessButterfly -
Oh I am glad that you enjoy it, most people hate me for it.
@POETIC_ISIS -
I have to be honest, I often got Eddie Izzard confused with Ricky Gervais. I don't why. Anyway some of his stand-up is brilliant and I did enjoy his work on The Riches.
@curiousdwk -
Currently I am listening to a playlist of Lehrer, just a few songs "Hanukkah in Santa Monica", "The Wiener Schnitzel Waltz", "My Hometown", and "The Vatican Rag". The funny thing about "The Vatican Rag" I was introduced to that song by one of my cousins who was a Catholic priest.
@bosefius -
I wish Eddie Murphy could go back to the days of Raw instead of Norbit and Haunted Mansion. I think I was one of the few who enjoyed Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football. Sam Kinison...man that guy's career was cut way too short. I was up early or late depending on how you look at things and saw him on Married with Children recently.
It's amazing how funny Will Ferrell is when he is onstage and not in front of movie cameras. I have to admit I loved those Landlord videos he did a while back.
It's amazing how big Dice was and to see how far he dropped. Brainsmasher, A Love Story...I think that explains it all.
@windoftheforest -
Well I am glad you are going to look up some of these people. I am definitely going to look up Dylan Moran.
One of my most favorite comedians is Lewis Black. I think he's a riot with his finger jabbing.
Rodney Dangerfield and Phyllis Diller ...there my favorite! You can learn so much from them!
@crazy2love -
I loved his show that had the debate. It was so funny. I think he is getting a show on History Channel soon.
@rickystar1 -
Sometimes I quote Dangerfield when people ask me how I am feeling. His material is great. I should have included you in the discussion of funny Xangans but honestly I thought that was so funny that this girl I mentioned started a Xanga page just to argue me that Dane Cook was great.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
his last stand up comedy dvd was hilarious. i think he sweated all the water he drank out while on stage doing his act.
@godfatherofgreenbay - Probably because I'm also the same kind...
I have a Phyliss story for you!
When I was 9yrs. old, my mom worked at a casino in Reno that would have celebrities come and stay in it all the time. My mom's job was to insure their security and privacy.
Sometimes my mom would take me to work with her for a few hours and I would have to hang out in an office. But once in awhile, mom would me me run a room service order up to a room. Everybody that ever opened their room door to me thought it was cute to send a kid up and I often made very nice tips.
This one time, I was running a order up when I stepped onto a elevator with Phyliss Diller. This was the 80's, so at the time you can imagine how wild she looked in that she teased her hair out to kingdom come and wore lots of neon colors.
Before she got off on her floor, she smiled at me, patted me on the head, cackled like she does and said, "Ha, ha, ha....you're such a cute little kid." And then she stepped off the elevator.
After I served to cart to the room I was suppose to go to, I ran to my mom and said, "Mom! The lady from Scooby Doo was on the elevator with me!"
My mom said, "Ah, you met Phyliss! She's really nice isn't she?"
Totally cool!
@ExposedWrists - Yikes...too many sss's in her name...lol...sorry!
@ExposedWrists -
That is an awesome story. I don't see many of the comedians of today being that kind and approachable.
aaaand this one we already covered...
