High School Mascots
The other night I was reliving the glory days of my football coaching career. I was thinking of a particular game that was a defensive battle. My team won with a late touchdown and with that win we also won the conference title. The team we played had one of the most bizarre nicknames I have ever seen first hand. They were the Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms.
That image comes from the school’s official website which can be found here.
When I was in the booth radioing to the coaches on the sidelines I noticed that the Awesome Blossoms even had a young girl dressed as the Blossom. She was having a horrible time. She was in tears and obviously didn’t want to be dressed as a mighty flower. I kept waiting for them to bring out food from Chili’s or Outback whichever has the blooming onion.
This got me thinking of some of poor nicknames of collegiate and high school sports teams. In this post I’ll just include some of my favorite high school nicknames.

Aah, the pan-handle would have hoboes as a mascot. Those crazy North Floridians. Everything else about Florida seems pretty normal to me, though.
Holy shit - I'm laughing my head off! The Idaho "Russets" Yes, the lowly potato is something to be afraid of. WTF were they thinking!
You're a genius posting this! Good stuff!
WOO! GO WISCONSIN!!! Kenosha is changing mascots because a lot of them are considered politically incorrect. Bradford is supposedly being changed to the Blue Flamers. Yeah .... lol
what thuhhh... ? lol ...i'd be embarrassed to wear the uniform for some of these teams ...kinda like some of the team names in the minors ...have you seen some of those?? totally ridiculous lol
It's too much!! "The Winged Beavers?" I don't know if I like it or it scares me. LOL!
The "winged beavers"...? *dies*
Colleges have some good ones too...like the Game Cocks or the Wheat Shockers
Hey, I recognize one! We live near the Orphans and Orphan Annies.
For Texas, I think you should have Randolph's Rohawks on there. It's a hawk flying on a rocket (although the mascot simply dresses as a blue hawk). I miss that school.
Hahaha, wow, this is pretty awesome... Great list... BTW, I don't know if you know but the mascot for Evergreen State College in Washington is a ... Geoduck... Do you know why? Because they are a very liberal school and decided that they wanted it "all to hang out"... Read the lyrics, and you might have an idea what it's supposed to be about. Our old high school mascot was a Saint Bernard.
Oh man, this makes me happy that I have a generic Jaguar mascot.
None from New Hampshire??? That's probably because we all have boring names . . .
some trippy names. My little class c school was near Ida MI. I remember the Bluestreaks well. they dusted us off often
@I_Create -
So is it true that the Flying Sandcrabs use a photo of Paris Hilton for their logo?
@DickDoktorII -
I never got around to posting the one for college teams. That list will probably be much longer.
@they_call_me_steffyjean -
HAHAHAHAHA the Blue Flamers! That reminds me of a Saturday Night Live skit that was of a high school changing their mascot. They ended up deciding to change it to the Flaming Folding Chairs.
@Peridot21 -
I should do a minor league one as well. Madison has had little luck with minor league franchises. Growing up we had the Muskies which was a Class A affiliate of the A's so we had Jose and Ozzie Canseco, Terry Steinbach (who was from the town where I went to college and is a Lutheran like me and spoke frequently at my school), Walt Weiss, Todd Van Poppel, Ron Coomer, Tommy John, Scott Brosius and Mark McGwire. Then they got another team called the Black Wolf which I thought was named after a hotel in my hometown...it was originally called Black Wolf Lodge and they called the field the Wolf Den. Now they have the Mallards and they call the field the Duck Pond. Beloit, WI has a Class A affiliate of the Brewers. They're called the Snappers.
@Unstoppable_Inner_Strength -
There was a team my school played that was the Beavers. Those bus rides were fun..."WHO'S GONNA EAT SOME BEAVER?" We also played a school that was a combination of three towns in WI...Galesville, Ettrick, and Trempeleau. They were GET High.
@filtered_sunlight@momaroo -
I can't believe no one thought of the innuendo that goes along with it. It took my dirty mind moving into a Minneapolis suburb to make people realize the Chinese restaurant had a funny name...Mei Dong.
@ShamrockLover -
Yes...I have yet to get around to making a college list.
@rafi09 -
Alright...thanks! I'll have to add it.
@m_kabs -
My first high school, we were the Rams, and then my next high school we were the Knights and then my college was the Knights. My first teaching position we were the Chargers and then my next position was the Tigers. The Chargers were just like the NFL team and all they had were lightning bolts.
@jacksoncroons -
I'll have to do some searches for schools in New Hampshire.
@wrybreadspread -
That's awesome that someone here has connection to these schools.
@mZdejavuZ -
I will definitely add that to my list of colleges when I get around to it.
Did you have a living St. Bernard for your games? One team I played against in high school had the nickname, the Mustangs, so they had a few horses running around the field during warm-ups. I hated that team because the horses crapped all over the field and no one ever cleaned it up and it seemed that whenever we played them it always snowed.
fantastic chinese food...
Entertaining post.
@RestlessButterfly -
Glad you were entertained.
Whaler is a pretty good mascot. It took a lot of bravery to be a whaler. Watch put for the harpoon. It is also a name closely tied to New Bedford's history. Perhaps this pan should be rethought.
