Movies That Make You Cry
I've seen a couple of pulses over the past few days about watching movies that made the person cry and I have thought about doing a post like this for some time. Yes, even someone as manly as me gets a little teary eyed at certain movies. I remember General Norman Schwarzkopf saying a man wasn't a man if he didn't cry. So if you want to make fun of my remember I keep a loaded glock next to my computer for reasons I have yet to understand but it's there as is a pair of brass knuckles. Overcompensate much?
Rudy
Rudy is probably the best sports movie ever made and if you disagree with me so help me I will come through the computer and unleash hell upon you. It's based on a true story although Joe Montana recently said that the so much of the movie was fiction. Thanks a lot, Joe. For that I will always remember you as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. Also why don't you worry about your kid playing at Notre Dame and his first week on campus getting an underage drinking ticket.In America
This movie tells the story of an immigrant family trying to make a better life in the U.S. I think you have to be carved out of stone not to enjoy this movie. I think out of the list this was the hardest cry. I really don't know why it hit me so hard. I know there was this exchange between a father and a daughter that just gets me every time. I never heard of this movie until a Blockbuster employee recommended it. Now I cry when I realize there will be no more Blockbuster.Dead Poets Society
This may be one of the only Robin Williams starring roles that I have enjoyed. Maybe I just enjoy this one because I enjoy teaching although I have yet to stand on a desk. I guess there is always tomorrow. I think the guy who played Red Foreman in That 70s Show sent in clips of this movie to get the job. He was an ass.My Girl
I think this is the first movie that I saw that dealt with...SPOILER ALERT...a child's death. It affected me at the time because the kid who died was my age and I felt bad that the kid would never get to experience life. Now when I watch it, I cry because that was probably the last good movie Macauly Culkin made.Up
OK, I saw this movie and the first five minutes or so hit me like a brick wall. I have always wanted a relationship like that but then I realized the moral of the story was that you couldn't have fun in life if you were married.Dancer in the Dark
Bjork stars in this movie and she puts in a helluva performance. This movie is so different from anything I've seen. It's hard to tell if this movie is a documentary, drama, or musical. The story breaks your heart and then how the movie ends...damn. I had a friend that despised this movie because it was "predictable" and Bjork's character was weak willed. She wasn't. I think that character is one of the strongest characters in cinema.Big Fish
This movie was beautiful and the ending...well I see a lot of my relationship with my father in this movie. I just hope that we don’t mend things when he is on his death bed.Miracle
USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA! My parents often talk about this and how I was two days old. For a while they thought of changing my name to Herb Brooks even though they aren’t hockey fans. That is how big that event was.Chasing Amy
It’s a tale that hit close to home for me because once upon a time I fell in love with a girl that I couldn’t have. Wait, what guy hasn’t had that happen? I seem to fall in love with those that I can never have and it hurts so bad. This movie hits close to home. I actually think this movie was one of the most accurate romance movies ever released.Hachi
Honestly, this has to be the best movie about a dog ever made. I couldn’t move after I saw this. I just sat there taking it in and I blubbered like a baby. This movie will definitely make you forget all those Richard Gere rumors.The Deer Hunter
I think this one got to me because my dad always told me about his friends that fought in the Vietnam War and how a few died. I have a neighbor that fought in Vietnam and all he will tell me is that it was absolute hell and he did things that he’s not proud of so therefore he won’t talk about it.Life is Beautiful
The things a father will do to ensure that his son is safe from the Nazis is such a great story. Maybe I have father issues.Honorable Mention
Shane
Old Yeller
Schindler's List
Field of Dreams
ET
Brian's Song
Sophie's Choice

My post is coming tomorrow! And you totally reminded me that Up made me tear up too.
Good post!
Ella's favorite movie is 'Up.' Such a cute movie. I just watched Miracle for the first time not too long ago. What a movie! I cried really hard in My Girl. Wow, what a tear jerker. I was young when i saw it and it was hard on me.
Have you seen Million Dollar Baby. It was a GREAT movie, but i can't watch it again because i BAWLED my eyes out. Not just a little bit of crying, but a full out "ugly cry" with intense sobbing. Even after the movie ended, i was hyperventilating because i was crying so hard. That movie was powerful and i have never been affected by a movie like that before. If you haven't seen it, it's a must-see, but be aware it will be tough to take in.
The Pursuit of Happiness was so sad at times, I could only watch it once. I cried during the scene in the subway station bathroom.
Crash didn't make the list? When the little girl runs out...
All of these...and the ones your readers mentioned...Crash, Pursuit of Happiness...Oh gosh, Brian's Song always ripped my guts out.

An old movie (even older than me!) called "Imitation of Life" makes me cry every time. To Kill a Mockingbird makes me cry. Gosh there are so many. When my kids were young and we went to movies, I'd look over at some point and they were all turned looking at me to see if I'd started crying yet. What's up with that?
Oh...there's a scene in The Patriot that makes me cry...a scene with Heath Ledger and Mel Gibson. Seven Pounds.
I'll stop now...
GREAT POST! You should have provided Kleenix.
i cried so much with my girl
i love that movie
I agree with my little niche. UP was a good one especially the going through life's motion scene. The Kid. And did you have to remind me how young you are? The same age as Macaulay Culkin? Go, run along and play, my son.
Health Inspector?? LOL
In that case, The Cable Guy made me cry. Big time.
hrmm I haven't seen any of these movies apart from my girl. I'm not sure if I cried or not, but I probably did. I really want to see Up, though. I heard it was good.
And, The Cinderella with Brandy makes me cry, A Little Princess make me cry Clueless makes me cry Star Wars, The lord of the rings... yeah. I cry a lot in movies. well, romance stuff. [frodo and sam ftw]
Hachi was pretty sad. haha
I have a problem. I can't cry at movies..I guess i'm insensitive or have a tin heart as my sister says. I will list some movies that tied a knot at my throat.
- Into the wild. True story about a law school graduate that lets everything behind and goes to experience solitude in Alaska.
- The Pursuit of happyness. Great movie.
- Reign on me. Adam Sandler is starring in a drama. The dude should stop making silly comedies and get an oscar or something.
- Friday Night Lights / The blind side. Two sports movies that i think are really heartwarming.
- Shine. Geoffrey Rush's incredible performance is heartwarming.
-21 gramms
-Philadelphia
Out of your movies i loved dead poets society and dancer in the dark. Life is beautiful, My girl and deerhunter were really good!
My Girl was one of my favorite movies...I cry at the drop of a hat when watching movies or television. I suppose I'm overly emotional
I never cry.
I've never seen life is beautiful...but i've seen roberto benigni live in chicago doing a reading in italian of dante's inferno...that should count for something.
lots of movies make me cry, but I cry easily, if it hits home it hits home.
I cried a little during toy story 3...hahaha.
Life is Beautiful made me cry for days.
But then again, I cry at every episode of Ghost Whisperer.
Hmm right off the top, i can't think of a movie, or movies, that made me cry... however. i have been known to cry watching tv shows (and even some commercials), point being, that there's no shortage of tears for me... i never saw the movie Big Fish, but i read the book, in one sitting, if i remember correctly... it was reallyreally good, i liked it a lot (maybe i'll read it again... )
I think I almost died when I heard that much of the movie "Rudy" was fictional. Seriously, it was like getting punched in the gut. I'm choosing to ignore that, though - it's one of my faves of all time. And I love the lesson you learned from "Up." I think you're spot-on. haha
My dad took my mom to see Deer Hunter for their very first date. She HATES war movies. He then took her to the Parthenon for gyros. She hates Greek food only slightly less than she hates war movies. Good job, dad. Good job.
@my_little_niche -
Can't wait to see yours.
@ShamrockLover -
Oh and another bit from Miracle, my parents' neighbors had a chimney fire on that night. It was just such a wild night. I think that is the biggest moment in all of sports.
I forgot about Million Dollar Baby. That is a great film. I don't know if I cried but I sat there in disbelief and shock. I'll have to add it to the list.
@klberry514 -
I'll plead ignorance in that I have not seen Pursuit of Happiness. I am not a fan of Will Smith but I guess that didn't stop me from seeing Seven Pounds. I'll have to see if my library has it.
@TheGiantSlayer -
Oh man, I forgot about Crash.
@adamswomanlost -
Yeah, I forgot Seven Pounds but then I was sort of confused at the end.
Ok looking back at Heath Ledger's movies makes me tear up because he was such a talented actor that died way too young. The same goes for River Phoenix.
@itsayanav -
Over the years My Girl doesn't make me cry but the first time...wow.
@POETIC_ISIS -
Sorry...I like to play but I was always warned about playing with myself...see there is my young sense of humor. Which movie called The Kid? The Charlie Chaplin movie or the Bruce Willis movie? I just thought of another...The Champ..."Wake up, Champ, wake up!" That gets me.
@ItIsAllGravy -
Health Inspector made me cry because it was bad and because people would love it.
The saddest part of Cable Guy was that Jim Carrey's part was originally written for Chris Farley.
@darkarin88 -
Clueless was such a great movie and I am always shocked when I realize it is based on a Jane Austen novel.
@xchinkylaydee -
My mom told me about it and how a co-worker let her borrow the dvd and gave it to her with a box of kleenex.
@ccRowp -
I guess when I say I cry I'm not saying I go full blown tears but I tear up or get that knot in the throat.
Ugh...I bought Into the Wild at a video store that was closing but I have yet to watch it.
Someone else mentioned Pursuit of Happyness and I will have to check to see if my library has it.
Reign Over Me...I have wanted to see that one, will check library. Sandler does great in dramatic roles. Did you see Punch Drunk Love or Funny People?
Friday Night Lights...I probably should say that this movie is the greatest sports movie ever made. The camera work and soundtrack...it's just awesome. I read the book and there were a few changes in the movie but it didn't bother me. The TV show is also very good.
It's been ages since I've seen Shine.
21 Grams and Philadelphia also should be on the list.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
Yes, I agree about those two actors. I feel the same way. I don't cry at all famous people's deaths...but Heath's really got to me. I had seen everyone one of his movies and knew he was headed for great recognition and awards. Also, interesting...I cried when John Candy died. I loved his movies. It was a few years before I could watch them again. Almost weekly I quote lines from "Uncle Buck".
Like "Bustin' my hump, earnin' my keep."
This was a great post! I love thinking about these movies that impacted my life in a positive way.
As for the crying...I've been known to cry watching commercials. Jeez!
@godfatherofgreenbay -
I just watched Reign Over Me again recently. It makes me cry. And it reaffirmed something for me...sometimes the best way we can help someone is just to be their friend.
@fortheloveofblogging -
I guess I am surprised at the reaction to My Girl. Maybe it was a matter of pride but people always said they didn't care for it. I don't know but I enjoyed it. It's fun to watch now because it reminds me of many of my summers at that age.
@SodomyClown -
I want to make you cry
That's a dick thing to say. You dick.
@TheSecretLifeOfPandas -
That's cool that you got to see him do a live reading. I am jealous.
I have heard people say Toy Story 3 had it's tearjerker moments. I haven't seen it nor have I seen the other two.
@Shy___Away -
Life is Beautiful is such a great movie but then most movies that deal with the Holocaust make me choke up.
@Peridot21 -
Wasn't there an episode of Seinfeld where one of the characters cried at a commercial? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Oh there's this iphone commercial where the father and son are talking and the father shows the newborn child and the grandfather tears up. Yeah, if I had a heart that one might get my tears going.
I've seen sooo many movies I am surprised I remembered these, most of which were not blockbusters. I like Adam Sandler movies. I think i've seen them all. Into the wild has an awesome soundtrack as well (pearl jam). Friday Night Lights tv series is probably one of the most underappreciated series of the last decade. It's really good. I was 14 when i saw Shine and even though it was one of my first serious movies (i was watching all kinds of crappy movies then) i really liked it.
@ZepBlueEyedGirl -
The only things I have heard were fictitious about Rudy were the scene with the players turning in their jerseys and also that Coach Devine wasn't as big of jerk as what the movie portrayed.
Now I am hungry for some Parthenon. I need to get down to State Street.
@adamswomanlost -
I enjoy Uncle Buck. It's been a while since I've seen it. In some ways I think that is my future.
@SodomyClown -
Whoa...sorry.
<3
@godfatherofgreenbay -
Everyone should be so lucky to have an Uncle Buck!
@godfatherofgreenbay -
I always loved the line in My Girl where Anna C says something about "Come back in 5 - 7 days"...'Cause she'd started her first period. That line is so cute.
@SodomyClown -
I bet if the two of us teamed up, we could make The Godfather cry...beg for mercy even.
@SodomyClown -
You had me scared. I was thinking you saw a comment I left but I can say it because I have Jewish in me according to my dad and the Mormon church.
I did see it. I was like NO WAY. I wanted to invite you for tea so that we could bond.
@SodomyClown -
I erased it because I know you have some uptight readers.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
I scrapped the entire thing because nobody was giving me sound advice.
John Q tears me up every time, and UP.
@KickingSheep -
Wow there's another good one that I failed to mention. It's been awhile though.
@godfatherofgreenbay - hmmm yeah, i think so... or, wait, was it when George cried at the movie Home Alone? (jeez i hope that's right, cause otherwise i have no idea who's in control of my brain right now lol) ...oh, and stop that "if" heart stuff, you can't fool me, mister!
I haven't seen very many movies on this list. I do cry a lot while watching movies (the ones with happy endings and the ones without lol) Perhaps I'm just one of those emotional beings that cry at anything.
I've seen Dead Poet Society but I don't remember crying. I didn't like Big Fish (so I guess I have to like it to cry at it). I remember crying during My Girl because I just knew what was going to happen. And Old Yeller well I cry each time I see it.
Movie I clearly remember crying in was P.S. I love you. Just the way the girl suffered over the death killed me. I cried threw the whole first half of the movie because of that then when she fell in love again I cried because it was so great that she found someone else. And I still don't understand why some people think that movie was funny.
@Peridot21 -
Yes, George cried at Home Alone. I forgot about that. Ugh and as I wrote my reply about how I didn't know I realized it was a person on The Sopranos that cried over a commercial for a power and light company. I get Seinfeld confused with The Sopranos. How is that possible? That tells you something about my brain.
That's right I can't fool you because you know I heart Betty White.
@NightlyDreams -
Dead Poets Society...it is such a great film and I guess it hit me because there were so many things that I wanted to do that my parents wouldn't allow.
Big Fish was just this great fairy tale. I need to read the book.
I never saw P.S. I Love You because that hit close to home for me.
I agree with the one's I've seen (about half) and I'm really pissed 'cuz I still haven't seen Life is Beautiful - I gotta put it in my Netflix queue. And I'm especially happy to see you included Brian's Song . . . All I have to do is hear that song in an elevator and I'm bawling my eyes out. "And I love, Brian Piccolo."
@jacksoncroons -
Even though I am a Packers fan, Brian's Song is such a touching movie. I think every time I see it on TV I stop all I'm doing to watch it.
Which movies haven't you seen? All the movies here are worth a view but I'd say you have to definitely put In America and Hachi in your queue.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
Yes I can see how you wouldn't want to watch it.
Why do you have Health Inspector in there. I thought it was suppose to be a comedy and UP?
@NightlyDreams -
UP...the first 5 to 10 minutes are very sad or at least sad in my book. Health Inspector was sort of a joke to see if anyone actually read and also because it was sad that Larry the Cable Guy has more movies than I do.
i cry at everything, just about... lol
but man, I really loved Chasing Amy. you're one of the only people i know who actually likes it.
@BranmacFeabhail -
Honestly, I think Chasing Amy is the best out of all the View Askew-niverse. It definitely was the most "real" movie of the lot.
The only movie that (I remember) made me cry was Fahrenheit 911, because of the scenes showing the American soldiers in Iraq... I watched it shortly after my dad had left for his first tour of duty in Iraq. I tend not to cry at movies, and the ones that got me choked up I'm having trouble remembering... except for Children of Men. Brilliant movie.
In the land of TV, I absolutely bawled when I went back and re-watched the Doctor Who two-parter Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. River Song is such a good character, and I've become even more attached to her this year, so re-watching those episodes really got me. Also when the President's secretary and chief of staff suddenly (but separately) died on West Wing (because the actors died in real life).
What a great post! There's nothing better than remembering good movies and getting reccommendations for others. I love really good sad movies and hate the contrived ones that extract tears even though you know you're being manipulated.
I think someone mentioned Sophie's Choice which I think is one of the saddest movies of all time. The book was almost unbearable.
What's particularly remarkable are your jocular comments. What a delightfully strange and twisted man you are.
@ithiliya -
I got upset after watching Bowling for Columbine. I think that is the only Moore movie that made me feel rage.
I remember my dad always watched Dr. Who. I haven't really gotten into it but I know for Christmas I want a really long scarf.
@judyrutrider -
I do think a lot of movies with animals are contrived. That movie Hachi is sad but it is based on a true story which makes it all the more remarkable. I am trying to think of other movies like that.
I hate movies that make me cry! But you've inspired me regardless.... Im going to make my own crying movie blog!
@godfatherofgreenbay -
It's sad that people actually think he's funny.
@theladyofabundance -
Awesome! That means I've inspired two people to post on this topic. That makes me so proud!
@godfatherofgreenbay -
Wow I didn't know that, do you know which one?
@darkarin88 -
Emma
I don't cry at movies... But... I did cry through most of Titanic gawd that movie was torture... except the part where...well if you saw it, you can probably guess. I got a little teary eyed watching Brian's Song and Up put just the tiniest little lump in my throat, because Ellie reminded me alot of my wife... Come to think of it, I cried during the first Ice Age, my wife and I were laughing so hard.
I really liked Dead Poets Society, no tears though.
@Aloysius_son -
yeah I know which part you are thinking of.
I ALWAYS weep whenever I watch Rudy.
@kachino -
The first time I saw Rudy was when it was theaters. My parents decided that wanted to see a movie on Sunday afternoon before they had to take me back to school for some time. I think we were the only ones in the theater and all of us were crying.
@godfatherofgreenbay -
Bowling for Columbine was a great movie (the only Moore movies I've seen are that one and Fahrenheit 9/11, and I wasn't overly impressed with the latter, just the one scene got to me for obvious reasons). The most rational people in BfC were Marilyn Manson and the South Park guys. What a world.
