Wisconsin
I found this on facebook this morning:
Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or10 months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit! We can get that for less than minimum wage.
That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan-- that equals 6 1/2 hours).
Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.
LET'S SEE....That's $585 X 180= $105,300 per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).
What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year.
Wait a minute -- there's something wrong here! There sure is! The average teacher's salary (nation-wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days= $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!
Make a teacher smile, give a shit about us.
If you want to contribute to the protesters to make sure they have something to eat here are a list of businesses where you can order food for those who are fighting for your worker's rights:
And if you want to contribute water contact:
Walker's rhetoric about the Democratic senators returning to Wisconsin to see democracy in action is laughable considering his whole stance on this is "there's no discussion." Democracy, fuck yeah.
Here are some more sights:
Doctors from the UW were out helping teachers whose districts were requiring them to provide a doctor's note. Sure, it may be fraud but it's fraud for a cause.
Good question. I want to see the military taking over schools. At that point is when I will resort to some of my illegal books.
Oh it's true...Walker doesn't have any college degree and he is trying to tell teachers how to conduct themselves. 100% of teachers in Wisconsin have more education that Scott Walker.
MEMES! I love the new Scumbag Scott ones.
See, it's not just a democrat and republican argument.
Madison did give us The Onion.
VIOLA...FUCK YEAH!
Come on, history students...tell me the significance of this one.
Oh shit...the internet is here.
Haunting
How is that Tea party doing?
Yes! We bring in Aaron Rodgers. Whatever side he picks must be the correct way.
OF COURSE...IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

I really love the fact that people are united against an injustice. Best of luck to kill that Bill
Know what? I'm putting this post of yours on both my tumblr and facebook..maybe even twitter <3
Wisconsin? That's in the wilderness south of Canadaland, right?
I think I might want to be a teacher :] yay apples.
$50,000 is too hefty of a salary for teachers! That should go to Scott Walker's pay! After all, being governor is much harder work than educating 30 kids a day, many of whom don't want to be there.
Rec Button... WHY U NO WORK???
This is serious stuff, and its important. Thanks for keeping us updated
Love the signs, love your math equation. Seriously, this situation just makes me want to cry. As if we don't have enough stupid people in this country already, let's take it out on the teachers. Fact is, it's not the teachers fault, it's that every time they actually do need a budget cut (and even when we don't) the first 2 programs to be cut are education and healthcare - the 2 things we need the absolute most in order to thrive.
It's pretty sickening how the people who spend the most time with our children are treated the worst. It's never really paid to be a teacher, policeman, or fireman, though, has it? Tons of risk, tons of job stress, not much pay.
It's profoundly sad to me that actors make millions per year or per episode, but teachers, who provide the most invaluable service in the world, make barely enough to cover their living expenses.
Very creative protesters!
The little calculation is great! lol
I've always thought it was amazing (in a bad way) that teachers were paid such a shit salary. You'd think they'd take better care of the adults who basically raise our children and provide their education.
Aw man, I posted this same equation and a bunch of protest signs before I realized you had. Now I gotta find something else... or just acknowledge that we both found this on Facebook, I guess.
@GodlessLiberal -
Yeah, I couldn't credit a specific person for showing me because I saw it about 15 times in my inbox this morning. How about this for a concession...you take those phone numbers and add them to your post so people that are your readers can help.
I have so much to say on this issue...so here goes. I can't believe Wisconsin would elect such a douchebag into office. I know the state is knowing for swinging either way, but it seems it is leaning towards Republican now with recent events such as this and Feingold being ousted. Maybe people will think twice about their vote next time! I also saw on Meet the Press this weekend that Walker was very upfront about what he was planning to do with the unions. I don't know whether this is true or not, but i can't believe he would be voted in with all these people knowing the unions could be at risk in the state.
I also believe that education is #1 and our teachers are severely underpaid. They are not babysitters...they are a vital part of the future for our country and our children. We need good teachers!!! Oh, another thing....did you know that there are 5 states WITHOUT collective bargaining? Do you know where those 5 states rank in ACT/SAT scores? The very lowest (states like Georgia and South Carolina). Sad, huh? And Wisconsin is #2 for the highest SAT/ACT scores. Teachers need unions or they will be mistreated even more than they already are. They are conceding to pension cuts, etc. to help the budget, but don't take away their right to fight for what's right.
My favorite poster: We Blame Favre.
Have you seen "Waiting for Superman" yet?
I dont know all the details about this political uproar but I'm guessing its nothing like the state of Egypt. Has anyone been publically raped yet? Or killed? Not until there is blood in the streets can we say this is like Egypt.
I just saw on another blog that I missed your birthday. That is suckish of me and I'm sorry. So...HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY!!!!
Cool pictures!
ESL teachers overseas make $20,000 a year.
Having been a teacher for years, I say "Wow." Thank you for sharing this. I have been so busy with family stuff I haven't been paying attention to the news.
Or xanga.
HUGS and hope you had a good burfday!
my rec button not working, but i rec this.
i havent had my own classroom yet, but i hear ya. this is not good.
really liked reading those signs.
I really do hope that it's all going to work-out for the best eventually. And even with all this, you all still have a great sense of humour. *thumbs up* Also,
Happy belated Birthday!
if a class is 30 students consider that the minimum wage of wisconsin I plug colorado's to be 7,36/7 well custome dictates that child support is 25% of income so during working hours one could say the entire care is that 25% of minimum wage. - of course school currently are county property and other taxes and not everyone owns it but nevermind we're digressing 25 opercent of mininimumwage... times 30 children which is 55,2 an hour? oh no no no! the maximum most exployess ever get is it all but most of make 10 - 15% of the money we truly generate so-since 5.52 an hour is not minimum wage call fifteen percent~ which is 8.28 /hr after all a teacher or any skilled works deserves to both afford the education and benefit fromseeking it..... but i bet teachers are not accepting that kind of pay cust. andthus pity I dislike your math-because you also know no one makes more than povertyline and they refus e to pay one red cent more than anyone else.
but whatever I hope teachers can rally support because general business is seek as much as you can get. collective bargaining. good luck
i gotta admit, despite all this shit that walker has gotten wisconsin into... i'm a little pleased to see that "30 year reagan republican until today" sign. : )
Damn there are some good signs there; Wisconsin has wit. And the average wage in the US for teachers is $50,000? That is not so much a wage as pocket money. Good luck.
That's an amazing calculation. Did you go to the demonstration?
I think when it comes to this sort of issue, the guy with the, "I blame Favre", sign is my hero. LOL.
Sorry your state is so full of suck when it comes to teachers....hopefully that will change.
Teaching is something I am VERY passionate about. It's something you do because you love it, and because it helps others. You don't do it for the money, because let's face it --- there's not a whole lot there. But to hear that anyone would want to take MORE away from people who have one of the most important and challenging jobs there is (and I'm not just saying that because I am one of them)...... astounds me.
They're trying to pass a bill in Ohio to end collective bargaining rights as well... what a dangerous road to go down!!
Oh yeah... awesome pictures, as usual :)
I'm all riled up now and probably won't be able to sleep. Haha, thank you.
I lolled. Hard.
