Beer
A few weeks ago I was asked about what beers I enjoy and I replied that most of what I enjoy is brewed right here in Wisconsin so I thought I'd take you on a tour of some of my favorite brews.

The New Glarus Brewing Company is probably my favorite brewery in the state. I think Spotted Cow may be my favorite beer of all beers. There are so many good beers that this company produces and I had to narrow it down to these. The Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart are fruit beers and come in champagne glasses. They are quite good. The sad thing is they no longer make my favorite beer called Coffee Stout. It was the perfect breakfast beer and went so well with cinnamon rolls. I would load up the back of my blazer with many a case of Coffee Stout to bring back to college.
Next up are two beers from Pearl Street Brewery. They are the That's What I'm Talkin' 'bout Organic Stout and Pearl Street Pale Ale. I was introduced to these beers at a bar in beautiful La Crosse, WI called the Bodega Brew Pub. This bar boasts a menu of 400 beers. I originally went in there because I was driving through town after being at a hospital visiting my dad and passing the world's largest 6 pack of beer, I saw a neon sign advertising a brewery that was in the town where I attended college. I stopped in so I could have a Schell's and the bartender suggested I try the Pearl Street beer after I finished my Schell's. Those were the only two I tried that day because La Crosse has a serial killer that likes to get young athletic men drunk and then he takes them and drowns them in the Mississippi River just a few blocks from all the bars but that's for another post.
Next up is the Sand Creek Brewery out of Black River Falls. I only included two of their beers, the Cranberry Special Ale and the Groovy Brew. Cranberries are a huge crop in this part of the state and now they have found their way into beer. It's actually quite tasty. I don't like cranberry juice but I love cranberry ale. Groovy Brew is a special brew made with special yeast. I have never had a beer quite like it.
Next up is the Tyranena Brewing Company located in Lake Mills. These are the only beers I drink from them, the Stone Tepee Pale Ale and the Bitter Woman IPA. Tyranena is located between Madison and Milwaukee and they sometimes put out a special beer called Brewers Gone Wild. It's a limited edition beer that the brewmaster makes. One year they put out a Bitter Woman from Hell Extra IPA. That was one of the best beers I've ever had.
Next up is the Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee. I tried to replace the New Glarus Coffee Stout with Lakefront's Fuel Cafe Stout but it's nowhere near as good as Coffee Stout. They recently announced a beer called Wisconsinite that will be brewed with only ingredients found in this state. I like that idea but when I saw the promo photos and what the glass was garnished with...well I was intrigued.
Up near the border with Michigan is where Black Husky Brewing is located and this jewel, Sproose Joose, is a double IPA brewed with spruce. Like the label says, it is quite aromatic and aggressive.
The next brewery is the Potosi Brewing Company. Potosi is in the southwest corner of the state. When I was at my first high school, we played against Potosi and at that time there was no brewery. The Potosi brewery ran from 1852 to 1972 and then closed. A restoration project started around the time I played against Potosi in football. The guy who spearheaded the project must've known I'd be a beer drinker all those years ago. After years of work he had the brewery operational and in 2008 the National Brewery Museum opened. The only thing is, I dislike the flagship beer of this company, Good Old Potosi Beer. The kinds I have enjoyed are Snake Hollow IPA, Cave Ale, and Steamboat Shandy, a beer brewed with cane sugar and lemon juice. I have another Potosi beer in my fridge called Fiddler. I think by the time I'm done with this post I will have to go crack it open.
Next up is the Sprecher Brewing Company. One of my favorite experiences surrounded Sprecher. I went there for the bachelor party for the Croatian Sensation and we drank Sprecher and we drank Sprecher and we drank Sprecher and we ended up at a bar shouting insults at a guy who played keyboards for The Violent Femmes. Sprecher has many fine beers but I think the product they produce that I enjoy most is their root beer or their cherry and cranberry pop called Ravin' Red.
Next up is Point Brewery located in Stevens Point. You can sort of tell I am sexually frustrated by the beer I drink. I remember going to a wedding near Point Brewery and I had never had either of these beers so I bought about 3 cases of each to take back to my place in Minnesota. I felt like I was the Bandit from Smokey and the Bandit.
The people at Minhas Brewery in Monroe give us Lazy Mutt Ale. When this beer came out there were so many commercials on the Madison TV stations and some of the commercials were pretty funny and others were bizarre and some attacked Spotted Cow. I remember the dog attacking a cow and that was supposed to tell us that Lazy Mutt was better than Spotted Cow. Well I haven't seen Lazy Mutt on tap in any bar in this area and Spotted Cow is on tap everywhere. Another interesting thing about this beer is that the bottles had fewer ounces than a regular beer bottle so instead of a six pack you got an 8 pack. It all equaled out the same amount of beer but it was just in two extra bottles. Monroe is quite a town. There is another brewery there called the Joseph Huber Brewery and they produce a pretty good beer but after Hurricane Katrina they also brew for the Dixie Brewing Company. Monroe is also popular for their cheese. So popular that the high school team name is the Cheese Makers. There is one cheese factory in Monroe that is the only place in America that makes Limburger cheese. So the next time you visit Monroe, eat the cheese and drink some beer.
This beer is the Houdini Honey Wheat from the Stone Cellar Brew Pub in Appleton. I first went to Stone Cellar for a wedding rehearsal dinner for my friend Skinny Wolf. It was such a wild time. We were drinking beer from so many different breweries that weekend but I remember this one. It was quite tasty or maybe I'm thinking of Dick Brau brewed in a little brewery in Hortonville that was located next to the only bait shop/beauty parlor/welding supplies store in the state of Wisconsin.
These fine beers are from the Ale Asylum Brew Pub in Madison. Spotted Cow better watch out because Hopalicious is my second favorite beer and could overtake Spotted Cow in the top spot at any moment. I first came into contact with this brewery through the Mad Town Nut Brown which was part of a beer club at a bar in my second hometown, Wisconsin Dells. This bar had a list of 75 beers that you had to drink from Memorial Day through Labor Day. At 25 beers you got a free meal at the bar, 50 beers got you a t-shirt and 75 got you a hoodie. Mad Town was on that list. That was such a great summer spent drinking beer with Skinny Wolf and his bride. I first had Hopalicous at a rap concert at the High Noon Saloon. The show was for albino rapper Brother Ali and it was a 4/20 show. Skinny Wolf and I bellied up to the bar and drank beer and listened to rap and then when Forest Whitaker played we jumped around.
Next is the Capital Brewery in Madison...well technically Middleton but it's all Madison to me but don't tell anyone from Middleton that I said that. Island Wheat is brewed with a special wheat from an island named Washington Island which is off Door County. The wheat has distinct characteristics because of the climate on the island and those characteristics create a unique beer. Supper Club is what they call a typical American lager and is supposed to take us back to the days when the supper club was in vogue. Whenever I sip it, I remember the Gobbler restaurant, a restaurant outside of Madison near Watertown, WI. It was shaped like a turkey and had a rotating bar on the inside.
Next up is the O'so Brewery in Plover, WI. Once again, you can tell I'm sexually frustrated by the beer I drink.
This is Furthermore Brewery in Spring Green. You know what else is in Spring Green? Taliesin by Frank Lloyd Wright so you know this is some good beer. I have no clue what that's supposed to mean but they do produce a good beer even though they don't have a brewery. They started brewing in small batches but couldn't keep up with demand so Sand Creek Brewery brews for them. They have a property in Spring Green that will one day become the brewery. This beer, Fatty Boombalatty, is a bitter Belgian wheat that tastes somewhat like an IPA. Another beer they make that I enjoy is called Fallen Apple. It's an apple cider brewed with a cream ale. The beer initially tastes sweet and then you get a tart flavor from the apples. It's so good. This gives me ideas for what I want to do with my apples one day.
I do enjoy the Leinenkugel's and these are my three favorites. I won't spend much time talking about them because they aren't a microbrew any more. The Leinie's site has taken it down now but they used to have a page of mixes of their beers like half a glass of Sunset wheat mixed with half a glass of their Berry Weiss. Those always made for some interesting pairings.
And finally, here's the Horny Goat Brewing Company. They give us Horny Blonde, Horny Goat Wheat, and Baby Got Bock. I hope you appreciate the photo of the Horny Blonde. You don't want to know all difficult times I had searching Google for a Horny Blonde. Once again..sexually frustrated.Just imagine the fun we could have at a Xanga meet-up in the happiest place in the Midwest. Time to crack open that Fiddler.

I hope you drank all of those beers... I'm sad I didn't see any brewed in Washington State. We've got some good breweries here.
State Street Brats. Get a pretzel and whatever beer is cheapest. Madison is sick. That's all.
The 1st beer that got my attention up there with a decent head on it was, Bitter Woman Beer. Great post!
Hmm, you do have many microbrews this makes me want to seek them out.
bitter woman.
i like the label on the groovy beer. and i had to laugh about your breakfast beer. here i am worrying about that whole drinking before 6pm nonsense and you've had breakfast beer.
the most exotic beer i've ever had is francoise lambic. nummy. i'm not fancy.
wow that is a lot of beer from one place... i recognize the Point brand (i've been to Stevens Point many a time) but i didn't know about the "nude beach" and "drop dead blonde" part...
great post gogb! it reminds me of this song (sorry it's not a wisconsin one, although there are some references...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04KQydlJ-qc&ob=av2e - put me in coach!!!!
suddenly I became thirsty...and thought that it's been a long time since I drank a beer...needless to say, I don't know any of those beers but I can tell you that, to answer an old post of yours, I found Duff beer in Florence...
Those all look amazing.
@Thatslifekid - If I could justify a road-trip to my parents, I would love to go on a road-trip with you to Wisconsin to find these brews!
Tried Berry Weiss last weekend... Not too shabby for a fruity brew. Any beer that can be mixed witha Carnation instant breakfast is a breakfast beer!
@Cestovatelka - We'll go meet the godfather himself. He can show us the ways.
And I'm drinking frickin' iced tea! I love wheat beer and dark beer with some body and not too bitter. When we were in England many years ago, one of the best things was the beer--it was like food.
I wonder if many of these brands are available in Iowa? I'll ask my brother and maybe try some when we're up there.
great workover, matt. thanks!
nice tour. thinking of beer reminds me of a riddle:
What's the difference between Budweiser and Guinness? When you drink Budweiser you piss water. When you drink Guinness you piss Budweiser. i've always loved that one.
Great info! I'll have to see if any of those make it to Colorado.
DEAR GOD, do I love this state!! I think New Glarus will always be my favorite WI brewery, and it was Spotted Cow that got me on the path toward Beer Enlightenment, away from far too many plastic cups of Natty Light.
Every time I drive by Plover, I think to myself that I HAVE to stop in at O'So and sample the offerings. I have yet to do that.
For whatever reason, I cannot get myself to like Leine's Summer Shandy (it tastes like watered down ick to me) or Honey Weiss (Is it a beer? Is it a wine cooler? It seems to have the worst properties of both) or Tyranena's Bitter Woman (it too hoppy in a bad way, but not hoppy enough, if that makes sense).
The rest of these, however, are top notch. LOVE the Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart; I'm not a dessert person, but would gladly make room for these at the end of every meal. And of course, New Glarus's Totally Naked is, to me, what just regular BEER should be. The fact that it's released right around opening day for the Brewers just reinforces my "perfect summer beer" characterization of it.
Speaking of, I think it's about time for me to blow this pop stand, head home, and crack open either a Totally Naked or a Two Women right now!
I now see that @Virtus1 is in trouble. Although he brews his own beer, I see that he now has competition for my heart. I suppose with enough of my Dorky, er, Dirty Blond Ale, we could all have a grand ole time together! My ale goes down especially well with those duck/boat thingys at the Dells.....
You do know that if I go to this wedding that you shall have to be my date. I'll behave, I promise.... so long as you buy me a beer...
Getting the giggles when I think on you Wisconsinites,.....or is it Wisconsonians.......hmmm, .....Wisconsoners? Hey! You're all cheese heads to me!
omg, I don't know any of these!! haha
I'll have to sample a couple of these when I'm out there. A few of those excite me.
@SasGal - well I was just covering beers from Wisconsin, I'll have to see if my liquor store carries any from Washington. I know a few of the beers I drink get their hops from Washington. The liquor store I frequent does mix and match six packs so I can try six different beers at a time without having to worry about 5 other beers if I don't like the first.
@starmanjones - oh they are rolling
@Asunderfrom - yeah I love State Street, so many fun times. The best was when the Badgers made it to the Final Four a few years ago.
@sleekpeek - glad you enjoyed. The first ever beer I had was an Old Style and after drinking one I was drunk but of course I was 3 at the time.
@Thatslifekid - and that's not even scratching the surface because there are more microbrews I haven't tried and then there are brewpubs. There's a pizza joint around here called Moose Jaw and they brew all their own beer and from the little I've had it's pretty good.
@promisesunshine - that label is the original reason I tried the Groovy beer.
@Peridot21 - after my first taste of Nude Beach, I was sold so I went to the grocery store across from the hotel where I was staying and I bought the case and I'm there in my tux asking the checkout girl if the name was appropriate for the area and if there were any nude beaches. She glared at me.
@xplorrn - I love that song, such a good song for the summer
@NiDH0GG - man that is still so awesome, I need to be on the lookout for it here or I will just brew my own and download a label
@Cestovatelka - yeah it's nice up here to have all those different beers
@saturnnights - yeah I love Berry Weiss and Honey Weiss. There was an Irish pub around here that mixed Berry Weiss with Guinness and called it a Chocolate covered berry.
if you brew your own beer just remember you have friends..
@whyzat - I bet you can get a few over in Iowa depending on what part of the state. If you're talking along the river shared with WI then I'm pretty sure you could get New Glarus and Potosi and Pearl Street and maybe Capital.
@complicatedlight - glad you enjoyed, have you had any of these?
@TheSutraDude - hahaha...that's a great joke, I can't stand Budweiser and when people who normally drink it try some of these beers they complain that they're too strong. I usually say, "No shit! You've been drinking water for all your life and no you're trying to drink beer."
@Addox - I'm sure if you'll find them if you ever make it to the beer conference or whatever it's called out there. A few years ago a friend went for a brewery in Minnesota and he said there were so many breweries and so many from Wisconsin.
@ZepBlueEyedGirl - I was always thankful with my college beer drinking that right off the bat on the first weekend I was introduced to Schell's. There were a few times when we drank other Minnesota offerings like Hackstein or Pigs Eye Pilsner...shudder.
Oh man, Honey Weiss is probably my favorite mass brewed beer. I never got wine cooler from it though.
I agree wholeheartedly with your take on "Totally Naked". I haven't had one in a while. Maybe it's time to visit the liquor store. I am also hankering for some Grain Belt Nordeast.
@Kellsbella - haha...the summer drinking contest I mention here was just a few blocks away from the boat tours. I think the Ducks drove by on their way uptown to pick up passengers for the Duck tours.
@raspberryjade - well a lot of these are only distributed in Wisconsin so that could probably be the reason...;)
@godfatherofgreenbay - haha i'm guessing she thought you were a tad crazy... with the tux putting it over the top!

@raiderjester - let me know which ones and I can get to the store for when you come through. The Dells has a few liquor stores but most of their beers now cater to all the European workers that come through working for the summer. There's one store where they don't even have Bud or Miller.
@godfatherofgreenbay - haha, so true. beer in Munich was sheer heaven. one of my best friends there once drove over an hour to a monastery so i could drink "the best dark beer in all of Bavaria" as he put it. it was delicious. there was a "the best in all of Bavaria" joke. for example he and his cousins took me to a festival in the town of Landshut where they bought me "the best steck'l fish in all of Bavaria". haha it was always like that.
@NiDH0GG - hahaha...yeah I'll have to let people sample via vlog
@Peridot21 - Maybe she thought I was James Bonds' dimwitted brother Timmy. The worst look was when I was at a liquor store and found a chocolate beer. I went to the front and asked if they had any ice cream. The lady just looked at me like I was Timmy Bond once again. I explained that the chocolate beer made for good ice cream floats. She said I was gross and if I wanted ice cream I should go to McDonald's.
smart guy
@godfatherofgreenbay - :D best part a rolling cooment isthegren can rock moment that can be added
@godfatherofgreenbay - No no no - love me some Honey Weiss. It's Berry Weiss that I can't drink.
And I saw Nordeast when I was in Duluth; man I regretted not ordering it when I had the chance. I don't know what I was thinking. Minnesota's got a pretty great little beer culture going - I miss Surly like whoa.
@godfatherofgreenbay - That's good. We rarely sell the popular BS at the Mare. I can't even drink that garbage. Bud, Miller, Coors, blech. In fact, the most "commercial" beer we have on tap is probably Yuengling. I prefer local, micro, craft, the good stuff. My favorites that we carry would probably be Monty Python, Boddington's, Magners (though we have a local cranberry cider which is KILLER), heck even Hoegaarden.
I see you're fond of stouts and IPAs. I don't care for either, but the wheats you've got on here look pretty good. I've had Horny Goat and Leinie's In fact, I've got a Berry Weiss in my fridge from my last "build your own 6-pack" I got. I would love to try that Fallen Apple, though. My favorites are scottish and wee heavy, though. I'll drink ales and lagers and pilsners. Whatever you got is fine by me, man. Just not big on the IPAs.
@godfatherofgreenbay - I know my buddy in Minnesota is going to treat me to some nice local stuff he's got too. It's going to be a great vacation lol
@godfatherofgreenbay - we have a local brewpub, except you can order kegs to take away. Kegs only.
@godfatherofgreenbay - Kalamazoo brew here. Bell's Oberon, Two Hearted Ale, and Kalamazoo Stout, loaded with anything dark, and good to the last mudslide at the bottom of the glass. Chewy!
@godfatherofgreenbay - wow, that is pretty. Cool. I wish I had a liqour store like that, but then my liqour store is pretty much any store now, lol. Have you tried the beer brewed by monks? I'm told the red label flavor us nommy.
