  • How I’d Fix the NFL if I were the Commissioner

Every year it seems to me that the NFL is changing and not always for the best.  I was talking with someone this morning about how we could make the NFL better if we were commissioner.  I have not been that big of Roger Goddell fan.  I have liked what he has done with players that always seem to be in trouble with the law as well as holding players accountable for wrongdoings they did in college but the rest of the things he does he comes off like a prick.

    1.  Reward the defense (4 points for a safety)  Roger Goddell has basically nutted the defense.  Why should a chip shot field goal that happens almost every game be three points and a safety that rarely occurs be only worth two points?

    2.  Touchdown conversions I’d like to see in the NFL what we played as kids in the alleys or empty fields.  A kick is one point, throwing the ball is two points, and running the ball is three points.

    3.  Punting is illegal  There is nothing in football as frustrating to watch my team punt the ball on 4th and 1 or 2.  I’d abolish punting on 4th down.  Punting would only be legal if the team is behind their 20 yard line or they are facing 4th and over 3.

    4.  Outlaw gloves Most of the gloves receivers and running backs wear provide such an unfair advantage.  If we keep on allowing them we may as well allow players to use stickem or glue of some sort.

    5.  No more domes Football was meant to be played in the elements.

    6.  Expand the season I wouldn’t add more games but I’d add at least two more bye weeks so the players would have more time to recover and wouldn’t have to rely on HGH.

    7.  Uniform uniforms Something that pisses me off about watching games is that all players have different equipment.  Like you see some players wearing knee pads and others not and the same can be said about hip and thigh pads.  They are called uniforms for a reason and also those pads are for safety.  So many injuries that I’ve witnessed as a player and coach have been a result of lack of protection.  I remember playing and tackling a running back.  My helmet went into his hip.  He screamed in pain and had to be helped off the field.  He wasn’t wearing hip pads.  As a coach I saw one player on my team lose the majority of his front teeth because he wasn’t wearing a mouth guard.  I also saw one of my players go for a tackle and his helmet landed on the other guy’s knee.  He wasn’t wearing knee pads and his knee hyperextended.  Granted this was high school level but these kids are seeing the NFL players going without pads.  I’ve always wondered what could be prevented with proper equipment usage.

    8. Abolish the tuck rule This has got to be the worst rule in the NFL and the biggest gift to the New England Patriots.

    9.  Yearly mandatory MRI of the brain The Nevada athletic commission requires this of boxers and MMAers.  It would help to keep on top of all the damage being attributed to concussions in the game.

    10.  Networks stop focusing on fantasy My league is real and if networks want to air my games then they stop airing anything about fantasy picks or numbers.  If people want to play fantasy football, great, all power to them, but that shouldn’t be the focus of analysis for the week.  It really grinds my gears to hear nothing about games and only about who I should start on my fantasy team.  Besides that fantasy football is a huge money maker and the NFL or players don’t get any of that money.

    11.  No profiting from injuries Another thing that grinds my gears is when I watch highlights ESPN, NFL Network, and other stations showcase the big hits where people get injured.

    12.  Get rid of the pro-bowl It’s the most boring game in professional sports.  Players don’t care and only seemingly go for the free trip to Hawaii or wherever the pro-bowl is being played that year.  I’d just have an imaginary team sort of like the All Americans in college.  Either that or make it a skills contest sort of like the Olympics but focusing on things relevant to the NFL such as which quarterback can throw a football through a tire from the farthest out or receivers competing in relay races or linemen competing in a tug of war.  Another thing that could keep the pro-bowl around is to have stakes to the game sort of like how the MLB All Star game determines home field advantage in the World Series.

    13.  Equal coverage  It sickens me that ESPN has its proverbial lips planted firmly on the ass of Tim Tebow.  Him running certain plays in practice is news?  For every second ESPN spends on one team they have to give equal coverage to the other 31 teams excluding games.

    14.  The ground can cause a fumble  I was always baffled how the ground could not cause a fumble.  Let it.  Consider it an extra player on the defense.

    15.  Only two commercial breaks per quarter  It seems like they take a break after every play these days.  I understand the companies have to make money but there is such a thing as too much.

Anyway those are just a few of the things I’d change or implement.  The list will probably change over the course of the season.

Been waiting since February and the new season is almost here.

  • Every TD the cheerleaders show their boobs.

  • Outlaw stupid touchdown dances!

There are too many commercials everywhere. Sometimes, they last so long, that I forget what I was watching! ShamWow!

  • i like some of the ideas. not sure about the ground causing a fumble. the play not being over when someone’s down could open up another can of worms. i definitely agree about abolishing indoor stadiums. i have to hand it to you. i thought you were going to suggest abolishing Big Blue from the playoffs.

  • great ideas but

    Dawgs By Nature‎ – 1 day ago

The Cleveland Browns‘ 35-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers

  • I like your changes, and I especially love the pics. Clay Matthews’ biceps are one of my favorite things in the world, lol.

  • Your Pro Bowl is a good idea. With today’s technology, why couldn’t the equipment be made out of some lightweight, impact resistant gel material (this is not to suggest a statement toward the cheerleaders … we’re talking the elite of the elite). Hey, it could be called: E-lite. Erm. Now I sound like a beer commercial.

  • 16. The Kicker shall not be the franchise player, give each team someone, something to believe in!

    Additionally: Go Browns!

  • Love these!  What is the tuck rule?  I think they are on the right track for personal fouls, but i think if they are putting another player at risk like that, they should be punished BIG TIME.  You are right, the Pro Bowl is a joke….i can’t even watch it it’s so annoying.

  • I love this gam….er…i mean post.
The Pro Bowl, forget the changes just ditch it.

My thoughts: Manning screwed Tebow, and will cost Denver this year as he adapts while Tebow was gaining them ground. Sanchez is and always will be first string but second rate, and Tampa Bay needs to live up to their potential this year.

Oh, and what @SolidStateTheory -  said

  • I like football, but my team isn’t very good. Oh well, I still plan on going to see a game this year.

  • And stop hiring criminals!  Anyone coming out of jail shouldn’t be earning millions of dollars!

  • it’s too hot for football…they should start in december and end in december

  • 16) Ease back on the excessive celebration penalties. I want to see outlandish dancing and crazy stunts!

  • yes, frequent MRIs… :D

  • @whyzat - I don’t mind the touchdown dances unless they involve props like when Terrell Owens pulled out a pen from his pants and autographed a football and threw it into the stands.  That seemed a bit much.
But yeah…all the commercials are awful.  There have been times I’ve fallen asleep during a commercial break causing me to miss a good chunk of the game.

  • @TheSutraDude - well if a guy is down then he’s down but if he is not down and the ball hits the ground and comes loose that should be a fumble.
A few years ago when the Giants weren’t doing so well ESPN was constantly “monitoring” the situation.  Every report was about whether or not Coughlin was out a job or how the players were revolting.  It was awful to be an NFL fan because it seemed like ESPN only cared about one team just like now you could make a case that there are only two teams in the NFL, the Broncos and the Jets.

  • @starmanjones - I think the NFL should spot the Browns 5 wins every season just so they could be in the playoff hunt.

  • @rachelbachel32 - That thing Matthews does after sacks is pretty intimidating.  I still wish the Packers would’ve tried to get his brother Casey.  Imagine that linebacking crew.

  • @sleekpunk - I remember years ago they had this Quarterbacks Challenge.  I think they stopped it around Brett Favre’s third or fourth year in the league because I remember him being part of it.  One challenge was to see how far a quarterback could hit a receiver.  Favre was like 60 yards from the target and he overthrew it by about 10 yards.  They even made a video game of those contests.  It didn’t even feature any actual football games but just the skill contests from that challenge.
I remember a guy in high school that had problems with concussions.  He had a special shell put on his helmet.  It made his helmet look huge.  There was an NFL guy that wore something similar

  • @Thatslifekid - Yeah I never got how teams could give a franchise tag to kickers or punters.  If that’s the best they have to offer then they ought to fold up or move to a different city to try to rebuild.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - We are rebuilding. Every. Year. Ever.

  • @ShamrockLover - Basically the tuck rule is if a player makes a forward passing motion it is considered a pass and if he tucks it in and loses possession it’s considered an incomplete pass.  Think of the play, in the 2001-2002 season when the Raiders were playing the Patriots.  Brady moves his arm forward to pass but then tucks it down and one of the Raiders hits him and everyone thinks he fumbles but according to the tuck rule it’s an incomplete pass even though the Raider recovered the ball.
This last Pro Bowl was the absolute worst.  I remember when I was a kid they seemed to be more competitive.  I’ve always wondered if it’s because players don’t embrace competition anymore or embrace the rivalries between the leagues or teams.

  • @IntoTheWind1 - I remember the Pro Bowl being more competitive when I was a kid.  Maybe it’s because paychecks have gotten larger since those days.
I think Denver will have a better year than the Jets.  I think Denver may even win the AFC West mostly because of the lack of talent from the other teams.
I totally forgot about all of Tampa Bay’s coaching changes.  They could be the team to beat in the NFC South.  I don’t know what to think about the Panthers or Falcons but I’m pretty sure the Saints are going to struggle.

  • @wyckdstorm - YES!  I can’t believe some of those guys can keep coming back after all their legal problems…i.e. Pac Man Jones.

  • @mlbncsga - NEVER!  I think the season is just right although I could stand high school and college being a little longer

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - North Carolina. They got all sorts of penalties and stuff this year.

  • @carolinavenger - I don’t mind the dances and the stunts but it’s when props are brought into the celebrations that I don’t like.  In a league of oneupmanship it’s only a matter of time before guns are involved.

  • @tribong_upos - while I don’t like how former players are suing the league because they are now having problems when they could’ve taken responsibility and had check-ups I hate how the NFL has marketed videos of the hardest hits and some of those players are the ones who have had such traumatic brain injuries and wound up killing themselves.

  • @Thatslifekid - Well this year may be decent with all their draft additions.  It looks like they gave up on Colt McCoy and will be going with Weeden.

  • @emily_shannon - oh the university of NC…yeah, I felt bad for them because they were one of the top teams a couple years ago and then it turns out their players were doing things that the coaching staff knew were wrong but they didn’t stop them.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - Yeah, it sucks because we can’t have any bowl games for the next couple years :<

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - I think the players just don’t want to get hurt, so the whole game is a joke because they don’t hit each other hard at all.  They are only playing half speed.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - you dearly love spoilers don’t ya  :D heheheheh

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - I just want 15 minutes with Vick and a baseball bat and a tub of water with a plugged in car battery!  Kisses to the kitties!

  • I am a Detroit Lions fan.  I have been one since they didn’t win any games at all and I realised that if I had played for them they couldn’t lose any more games.  My Favourite player is called ‘Suh’.  “My name is Suh; How do you do?”  I bet I am the first person to think of that.  Well prolly not but I just thought of it.  So it’s new for me.  Suh is MEAN.  I respect that.  He is mean enough to play for the All Blacks.  I like the Lions outfits too.

My most favouritest team is the mighty Freo_Dockers. Otherwise known as the ‘Team of Despair’

  • @bundyinspeedos - I have to say I do like the Lions uniforms too.  Something about them, like they are from the old days and I like that.  I wasn’t a big fan of Suh when he kicked that guy from the Packers while he was on the ground.  I have to admit he is a tremendous talent and hopefully will bolster that line.
