  • Ran-dumb Thoughts

    So...how ya doin'?

I still am not technically "back".  What I think of as being "back" is when I can actually sit down and be able to read everyone's posts.  I said that I will be "back" within a fortnight.  I told that to someone on Facebook and they asked, "What is a fortnight?"  Look it up.  Sorry, but if someone uses a word with which I am not familiar, I will bivouac myself in front of a dictionary and look for that specific word.

Lately I have been watching Duke basketball just so I can see a former Xangan.

I was talking to my girlfriend on the phone the other night and something I said startled my cats.  They were sleeping in a chair across the room from me and when they heard what I said they jumped up looked at each other and took off running.  For some reason they thought that I wanted to dine on feline.  Oh this was just a joke because there is no way I could have a girlfriend.

So this newly-wed couple was on their honeymoon and they went to see the Pacific Ocean.  When they arrived at the beach the woman looked out with a dejected look and said, "I thought it would be bigger."  The husband sadly remembered that was the first thing she said on their wedding night.

So I have narrowed down the two songs for my first dance at a wedding reception...not that I am getting married..."Gigantic" by The Pixies or "Let's Get it On" by Barry Jive and the Uptown Five

I thought that what Conan O'Brien did on Twitter was amazing but I was sad he didn't pick me.

My hometown had a contest for a new tourism slogan.  My suggestion came in second.  It was: Traveling despondently is better than arriving here.

Oh and yes, I watch the Oscars because I always fancied myself a film buff.  The only bad part was that I missed some of it because I was watching Antiques Roadshow.  I fucking love Antiques Roadshow.

Brittney Griner landed a punch against a player from Texas Tech last week.  I was shocked that there were no sexist comments on ESPN seeing as a week earlier Tony Kornheiser was suspended for saying that one of the female broadcasters should dress better and not wear Catholic school girl outfits.  That mentality had me expecting to hear an announcer say after a highlight of the punch, "Gee...must be that time of the month."  Come on this is ESPN.  They hate women and Christians.  When Kelly Kulick won the men's Professional Bowling championship broadcasters immediately said that it didn't count because any sport where a woman can defeat a man isn't really a sport.  AND THEN THERE'S DANA JACOBSON...who while talking about Norte Dame football at a roast of Mike and Mike in the morning said "Fuck Notre Dame and Jesus."  Her excuse....she was drunk.

And so baseball season is about to begin.  I am anxious and have my teams selected for betting.  Yes, I know that if I bet on baseball I will be banned for life from the Hall of Fame but that is a risk I am willing to take.  I am also in the process of writing down the 100 qualities of New York Yankees fans and for some odd reason "common sense" always sneaks in at #79.

Has anyone else noticed that wikipedia is slowly becoming the actual Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

  • lol on your last line!!!

  • Baha, excellent choice for a first dance song. I approve. Meh, I don't care much for basketball or baseball these days.

  • they should change the name. and then put DON'T PANIC in reassuring letters on the main page.

  • haha well, shoot, you got me... here i was thinking the godfather found himself a girlfriend hanging out over there at that library all the time =P

oh, and speaking of baseball, a couple of weeks ago, some friends and i went out to dinner... and John Smoltz was there... that's all, just a little ran-dumb info for you, from me =)

(good grief... look at all those commas! ...it's all i can think of now lololol =))

  • I'm starting to think you like hanging around the library. Do they serve beer in there?

  • good choice of music! :) lol @ your travel slogan! ps: i like antiques roadshow too although it's been a while since i caught it on tv.

  • Hey you! I love the observation about Wikipedia becoming the Hitchhiker's Guide . . . yeah, I can see that.

  • Oh, you have to like us girls. Your cats will adapt to the language.

  • Glad to see you're back.  Sort of.  I mean "sort of back" - not "sort of glad".  (smile)

Just because English is our heritage doesn't mean that we as a society understand English - especially English phrases.  Who was it that said that Great Britain and the United States are two countries divided by a common language?

Are you taking a poll (maybe forming a pool) to see how many people had to look up "bivouac"?

I liked your tourism slogan.  That looks like it fits the description of a place I just read about in Mississippi where they decided to cancel the entire Junior/Senior Prom rather than allow two girls to go together as a date.

Take care of yourself.  And I hope your dad is okay too.

  • If that former Xangan could look through the tv to see you back, I'm sure they would. In a completely non stalkerish/creepy way.

  • You're back!  For good I hope.

  • Whatsoever of 'back', but at least you're back nonetheless.

  • The only music we had at my wedding reception was Jimmy Buffett tunes :)   Just low-key background music.   I'm really glad, too, because the few weddings that I shot back in my semi-pro photog days, the music was HORRIBLE.

  • Hell yes for the music!

  • @And_I_love - There is so much from the inaccurately named Hitchhiker's trilogy that seems to have come true especially how wikipedia is basically the guide and also the Sub-Etha-net being what we call the internet.  It creeps me out that he is writing about that stuff in the late 70s and early 80s.

  • @dlmcniel - I had a whole list of songs that I went through and I may have to share those in a future post.

  • @BranmacFeabhail - That would be so sweet...I am surprised that the movie company didn't do anything with wikipedia in connection with the release of the movie.

  • @Peridot21 - No...no library girlfriend.  It seems like the only girls here are WAY out of my league meaning they are in their 70s, married, or still in school.

That is pretty cool about John Smoltz...a future hall of famer.  Too bad I will never join him because I like to place bets...sigh...oh that reminds me of the time I sat a table over from former Green Bay Packer Gilbert Brown at a restaurant.  He devoured 3 racks of ribs, 3 baked potatoes with all the toppings, and three baskets of bread rolls but he never touched his first salad.

Yes, I, meaning me, love, and I mean extremely love, commas.  I wish more people knew how to properly use them.

  • @dikdoktor - I usually bring in my travel coffee mug which is filled with Irish coffee.  Drinking at the library isn't as bad as the kids who sit out in front during the summer using the free wi-fi and smoking pot.

  • @royal_diadem - Some of the recent episodes of Antiques Roadshow that I have been enjoying were filmed in Madison and it has been fun to see the history of my state come alive.  I am not much of an antique person but what I love is all the history content brought forth in the show.  That is also why I enjoy the pawn shop show and junk picker show on history channel.

  • @jacksoncroons - I can spend so much time getting lost in wikipedia and I can just imagine that is what Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect doing.  It's amazing that Douglas Adams had that foresight.

  • @POETIC_ISIS - It's strange for me to talk vulgar, which may seem quite odd after reading my posts.  I hate the spoken vulgarity but I love to write it...I know, I have issues.

  • @curiousdwk - I only remember bivouac because of an English teacher in high school reaming the class because we didn't know what the word meant even after we read the assigned reading.  That made me really start looking up words I didn't understand.

I was conversing with a teacher in England and she always says that I don't speak American but that I speak English.  Apparently there is a huge difference but I refuse to write colour instead of color.

Oh I saw that thing about the high school in Mississippi and was disgusted.  It's a public school and they should not be allowed to cancel the prom like that.  If it were a private school then I would have to agree but not a public school.

Thanks...I hope everything is going well for you.  My dad and I both have had vehicular setbacks at the same time.  I had to replace brakes and a wheel bearing while he had to have a part of his car's computer replaced.  Apparently he NEEDS working lights.

  • @MrsMok - I sometimes fear that my watching Duke basketball comes off as stalkerish however this Xangan did make me remember my love of Duke basketball and my deep respect for Coach K.  I can't wait until I get a computer again so that maybe just maybe I can be a Dukie via the internet.

  • @RestlessButterfly - Yeah it feels good to be quasi back

  • @ithiliya - At one point of my life I was a professional groomsman and I hated many of the receptions because of the music.  I deejayed a wedding and all the people came asking for slide dances and I was like NO!

  • @windoftheforest - I may have to show more of the list of songs that didn't make the cut.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - I had a friend in high school who was a deejay.  At first, I thought "wow, what an AWESOME job" but then he deejayed a dance at our school, and I realized what horrible, horrible music he had to listen to over and over and over again.  I consider it a minor miracle that he didn't make an attempt on his own life at any point.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - hahaha same here ...in their 70's, married or still in school ...what is up with that anyway???

oh, and did you notice there's no oxford comma in that sentence? muhahaaaa =P

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

I'm sure it doesn't come off as stalkerish at all. Only positive things result from watching Duke Basketball. (Unless they lose that is). They've got a game coming up in 2 minutes!! 12pm EST on ESPN for the ACC Tournament. Hopefully they'll advance and I think the rest of those games will be ion ESPN and then stream on espn360.com then for the NCAA Tournament they'll be on CBS (I think). And (I think) CBS has the games streaming from their website.

  • Glad to see you are (ummm, not sure how to put this) in the process of getting back?
    Miss your posts!

  • Hey...if it is becoming The Guide, then I'm gonna always carry a towel with me from now on!

  • @ExposedWrists -

I always have a towel with me...well my clothes are as big as towels so I expect that they count as well.

  • @itsjustamething -

Well I think I am finally back for good or at least until they come to take me away.

  • @MrsMok -

    So Coach K...New Jersey?

  • @godfatherofgreenbay -

yo. that is def not happening lol
